i am considering ...(well i already know i need one ...its just which one ...bit like like my first post where i had to make up my mind between a squadie 58 or a m56)

well moving on ...
i need to buy a 4.7 to 5 mtr rib and sort of narrowed it down to
1. avon 490 seaport dl with 100 four stroke
2. Nautica r16 deluxe with 90 two stroke

this rib will be used mainly to transport me and guests to my own little floating marina (its only a pontoon really)

the avon 320 jet that is on the back of lady anna is nice as toy but absolute crap as a tender...that will stay on the back of the boat

i have another 4 mtr rib which my crew and staff use which is now looking a bit tatty and cant use it much longer to bring guests etc to the boat (if one of you visited goa and i invited you to lady anna ...i wouldnt want you sitting in that rib)

at lbs i got a what i thought was a good price on the avon...coming in at abt 18500 pounds delivered goa with trailer

and then i came across nautica (www.nauticaintl.com) and i am getting a similar size rib with twice the equipment and more compared to an avon....depth souder.vhf , teak deck, bimini and more at an astonishing price of us 21,000 which abt 11500 pounds delivered goa ...with trailer

has anybody heard of nautica ?
they manufacture out of florida and i think they are quite popular in the states

anyone have any experience with them?

yr comments /thoughts please
best rgds

Look at valiant as well for a rib.

If not a Quicksilver 430 hd dinghy with a 15hp will do the job at a small percentage of the cost of a rib.
Quicksilver are sold by Mariner/Mercury outboard dealers.

Nautica popular in the Superyacht tender market I believe - certainly a recognised name. (and I guess you are on the verge of the superyacht market! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif) Avon's are good. Other makes that come to mind would be ribcraft 4.8m (but probably a bit too rescue boatish) and Valiant. Might be worth posting the question on www.rib.net/forum which increasingly has a global perspective!

-8C with windchill and more heavy snow tommorrow here in Canada. I'm not jealous at all...........

Nautica

Hi Bigmoose,

I've not heard of the r16, but I have a jet 12 which I've owned for three years.

Its a great little runabout
A much better boat than Avon/Zodiac/Valian/Apex etc IMHO.

Never had trouble starting in hot humid African climate and have had excellent service from the US for small things that have needed replacing..

And you're right they are fantastic value, compared to European spec boats with the current Xchange rate.

Hi Bigmoose. Pretty cold in London, dont bother bringing your shorts. Had to scrape ice of car this morning

Nautica is well known brand seen on many of the superyachts in Med. So I assume they're ok as regards quality etc. The upmarket teak decked and biminied versions would make a nicer tender for your guests than the alternatives imho. Avon is nice but not as luxurious as the US and italian Ribs. Valiant is excelent vfm but feel cheap. Many/most of the others are styled with the dive market in mind rahter than the luxury market - like floating landrovers rather than Lexuses

And the price difference makes this a no-brainer. Though £1500 ish of that difference is due to the 2 stroke vs 4 stroke. A big chunk of the rest is the cheap USD, yee ha

But why 16 feet + 90hp? That is a lot of power, you'll want a pilot's licence. You could get an 18footer with 90hp and it will still do 40knots+ with 1 up, and plane well with 7 or 8 on board. So if you want it to move guests, why not get more Rib and the same engine? Or if you think 16feet is ok a 60 or 70hp would be fine (not that I want to spoil your fun, get 90hp if you want, just hold on tight /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif)

What make is the 90hp? Merc or Yam I hope!

do u keep yr boat in sa?
did nautica have a sub dealer there or did you buy directly from the us ?

Jfm
both the engines are yam

the r16 cannot take a fourstroke 100 or 90 due to the weight of the engine
ideally i would like a bigger rib but i sometimes beach them so the next up r18 is abt 250 kgs more than the r16 coming in at 350kgs
the additional wt makes a diff when you have 3 /4 of us having to pull it up a beach or drag it back to water

also have the keep in mind the swl of the 72 predator hydaulic platform will allow me to carry the r 16 on the back and i can put the 320 jet in the tender garage
i would not be able to lift the r18 on the plarform

w/r price the price diff in the us between the 2 and 4 stroke is only abt abt us$1300
the 90 four stroke priced at $8700
the 90 two stroke at $7400

i have been offerd the r16 with a 60hp four stroke at abt $20k del goa
methinks it may be bit slow.....also i want this to be a play boat as well not just boring tender so having all the bell and whistles put on

best to all

OK got all that, esp the pred72 platofrm thing. In which case get the r16 + 90 2-stroke. This will go like a batmobile, tremendous fun, and it will look the part. Yam is excellent engine

I'd definitely get the 2 stroke. There's sometimes a view that 4stroke is "better" but I'd question that. I've had both several times over. The 2str is lighter and cheaper (and the weight is important for you) and modern 2 srokes do not oil up and run rough - the Yam will run smooth as a sewing machine and fire up as soon as your finger touches the key

Ultimately an outboard is there to be thrashed and have fun with, and they all go manky in saltwater after a while. So get the fast light 2 stroke, scream around at 50mph, then chuck it out when you're done with it and just get another :)

Re: Buying a New Support boat for Lady Anna

On reflection bigmoose, what about a serious support boat? Lady Lola is being sold and the new owner doesn't want Lady Lola Shadow, her support boat, so it's available. Kind of a white elephant for the owner (a Mr Duane Hagadone, a real estate developer/investor from midwest USA), once the mother ship has been sold, so he might be open to offers. Has a chopper included, so might solve your other issue too. Perfect deal for you. My fee for this suggestion is a drive in the 135 knot cat
