Last time I looked, France was in the EU, too, so what Temptress wrote applies.

Note, though, that all of this assumes the boat actually is legal in Ireland -- i.e. VAT paid (or 'deemed VAT paid') and RCD compliant, or exempt. You'll want solid evidence of both before you buy.

If you need more info on either of these, a search will throw up dozens of threads. Good luck.

Is she currently a reg as a commercial boat? If so and she is owmed by a company rather than individual (even if as a sole trader ie fisherman) chances are she is not VAT paid and remember Vat is due on the value of the boat not the price you paid. Havent a clue how or if the RCD applies to change of use from commercial to recreation after all its quite possible that a comercial fishing boat that has spent 10 years out in the Irish sea in all weathers might under ther terms of the RCD be only fit for inland waters because there isn't a safety wire beteen the stantion tops and the deck edge, just a sheet of 5mm steel plate!!

Hi Smoker

I bought my current boat in Dublin Ireland the only difference I had from buying in the UK was removing her from the Irish shipping register and placing her on the British ships register.

Make sure you have the ORIGINAL ships VAT PAID documents when you purchase the boat or you may find your self having to pay VAT again on the estimated value now.

I also held onto all of the Irish ships papers incase I needed to prove ownership or anything later and these I keep on board in case offcial boarding

Does it make any different that it was built in france ???

The original invoice will be in French but you still need it to be safe, also be good to have the original Bill of Sale.

i also bought my current boat in dublin (Howth), now based in the solent. Same procedure as buying here in England. Mine had irish VAT paid at i think 21% someone may correct me on this. Just bear in mind if the purchase went pear shaped it would be under Irish Law.

Hi....I have spent many years selling trawlers and fast offshore work boats to both N and S Ireland...believe me ...if it was a trawler...or a commercial boat of any kind ...and is owned by someone resident there...then they will have reclaimed vat on purchase ....from another vat reg person...in France ..or wherever...and it will be liable for uk vat on bill of sale value....they may want to look at it ...or not...if they do ...and it's 200K's worth ...and you have a bill of sale for 20K ...then they may decide to re-assess it themselves !!!However...in my experience...they can't tell the difference betwixt a 15 or 35 k used trawler's value...without the assistance of someone like me to tell them...so .......
I HOPE THIS HELPS
p.s. the irish commercial boat users are a pretty canny lot.......
