Been a while since I last posted.............

As I am down in Jersey I am not terribly up to date on how you folks register a car in the UK, let alone how to get around doing so with no fixed abode!

My boat is still over in the UK (work commitments and weather got in the way), I will be spending a month or so on holiday / making sure she is shipshape for the channel crossing - I will need a car in the UK, for running down to B&Q and the supermarket etc.

I could hire one, but for a month (or so) this seems an expensive route. Also it would be nice to have something which I would not worry about filling with the usual fitting out rubbish.

At the moment I make do in Jersey with a Moped for my 10 minute daily commute (eat yer hearts out!) and for carrying stuff a Toyota something (it's a 4 door saloon with a hatchback and it's grey!) whose former life was a Taxi. To say it is well used would be an understatement. Apart from the ridiculous expense of shipping it over to the UK (The Ferries and Airlines have us hostage down here /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif) I would be none too confident of using it on the motorways. or above 40mph. or in the rain. or at night. (No MOT down here /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif) - in any case it will probably "die" of it's own accord later this year (but I said that last year /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif).

So I figure why not buy something cheap and cheerful and with a load carrying capacity in the UK either to sell again after my trip, to bring over to Jersey or even for me to keep in France.

My question (Finally!!) is, how to do I register a car in the UK without a home in the UK? Can I use the marina address as a c/o? or rent a PO box? can I use my Jersey address? What about a non UK company (who could have a UK PO box for a while if needed)?

I figure liveaboards is the place where a similar situation is most likely to crop up.

I assume that MOT and Road tax just get transfered with a vehicle, so as long as these are current when I buy I will not have to worry about them and that if I can "crack" the vehicle registration address then insurance will not be a problem.

I figure I could just ignore the "formalities" but with all these new laws you guys have I do not want to accidently end up in Belmarsh or on half an aeroplane trip over the North Sea.

DVLA want to be able to contact you, therefore you must have a current address - it is an offense not to tell them if you change.
On saying that, I liveaboard and use the Marina as my postal address, and licence, tax,MOT, insurance people have accepted that.
I figure that wherever I go, as long as my "address" is current on the documents, I have fulfilled the obligation. The downside is that any parking or speeding fines will catch up with you!

With the cost of car hire against the cost of insurance, road tax, Mot and spares - it would be a lot more simple to rent something like a Hyundai Atoz (or one of the same, but differently branded models) - which would use nout petrol and carry a fair bit -we had one in Greece and it was brilliant.
The DVLA don't allow PO box's as far as I know - but maybe an address in Jersey would work - like the marina - if you do get a car, I reconmend either a French diesel estate (Peugeot 405/Citroen BX) or an old Mercedes diesel estate - both of which are cheap to run and very reliable!

Best wishes and good luck with your travels
