Hello all!

I'd live right by the side of the Avon and would love to get my self a motor boat. Nothing special, just a little thing with an outboard and steering wheel, and as you can probably tell by now, I have no clue how to go about getting one! It's not so much buying one I'm confused about it's more all the things I don't know about. I plan to keep the boat on dry land, and then when I want to use it simply put it in the water for the day, saving on mooring fees. But what about tax? or licences? I haven't a clue! can anyone inform me of what I legally need in order to have a small motor boat on the river ?

Many thanks

Stu

You will need to sit a special trailer drivers test, you can do that for around £300, then you have the skippers tax, that is variable depending on the tonnage of your boat and number of engines, you also have blade tax on your props, best to go for a twin bladed one as that could save you £50 or so, broken props are still charged at the original amount. The boat tax is dependent on the length, you can get all these forms B11 L5 hit from the post office, it details the charges. Don't forget river tax, fuel tax, insurance, slip fees, rado licence fee, storage fees, trailer maintenance fee, tow hitch costs, trailer costs, SSR fee, brokers fee and river licence inspection fee. Other than those listed that is about it, a cheap day out on the water /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

If you need a list of safety gear let me know and I can send you it /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

If you can't already tell GC1 is winding you up, but never mind. If there is a sailing/boating club near by go and get to know them, as you will need to be licensed if the section of river you are on is non tidal, also there are certificates of safety for the boat. But not having the pleasure of knowing your area I cannot be more specific. But dont let that put you off, I often hankered after a boat and it is only now that I am getting knackered that I have got one. Go out look around at boat yards talk to people and enjoy the water
Good luck, Mal

Probably the best advice so far. Talk to local people who already know your preferred area. Us boaties love talking about boats, so you will have no trouble getting appropriate advice for your stretch of water.

GC1 did miss off the compulsory toaster tax.
