Buying a boat.

I havent bought a boat for years,the last one I sawsailing and bought it without too much thinking.I am now going to hopeful going to buy another boatbut do not have a clear idea except for size and budget,how much tyekicking is allowed,can I ask for a trial sail etc and say thanks i will thik about it,My last boat I sold without too much fussand bent over backwards to explain everything ,any thoughts on this.
