Buying a boat

I am looking in to buying a boat for the first time, I will hopefully be using it for sailing around the Med ( after taking some RYA courses ) Can anybody enlighten me on what the legal requiermemts are eg insurance etc...
Any words of wisdom gratefuly received

lots of regs around europe, far more than we have, but if you are british registered you will need the following:

registration certificate (SSR or part one)
3rd party insurance (spanish translation nominally required though they don't seem to ask for it these days)
ICC - obtainable from the RYA if you have day skipper or above, plus a cevni endorsement if going on any canals.
evidence of vat paid status if staying in ec for more than 6 months.
you could be asked for proof of ownership if you have SSR registration.
the first of these is the really vital one but others may be asked for occasionally.
nothing will protect you against corrupt or xenophobic officials in some ports so take some cash to oil the wheels of justice (never happened to me yet but one hears stories!)

Which part of the Med are you thinking of sailing in and where would you berth the boat; larger it is the fewer, and I mean FEWER the berths available. As of to-days date I am not aware of any berth over 10mtrs. available long-term on the Spanish mainland or Islands.

Also expect to do far more motor sailing than sailing.

Perhaps buy the boat in Europe; there are lots of British boats for sale where the owners have either given up or bought a home ashore and you can get quite a few bargains.

I've been able to do much more research thanks to your useful comments
I'm off to spain in February to do a little hunting
Luckily i have a friend out there to help with mooring problems
