Buying a boat from Ireland

Check that all the paperwork is in order and that the vat has been paid as there are quite a few boats for sale in Ireland that are vat unpaid.

thanks.. am I correct in understanding that in that regard, it doesn't matter if the boat resides in Northern or Southern Ireland.

Is there anything I should watch for / consider in addition to buying a boat from the mainland?

No it's much the same as the mainland (ie Germany, France, Spain, etc). Most ROI boats will be vat paid but always seek proof of vat. ROI leisure vessels are generally not registered. Like buying anywhere a good survey is recommended.

In general buying from EU member states will not incur customs or VAT as long as these are sorted according to the EU rules.

Exempt rules of course vary, but if paid in full in a member state import to another will not trigger further. Any potential purchase should be checked, also for outstanding debt, pledging, mortgaging, pending insurance cases etc.
