Buying a Boat from Cadiz Spain

I sold my Sealine S24 a few years ago and have been pining to get back on the water ever since, I would really like to buy something that can sail or motor and has a bit more room so have been looking at Yachts with 2 helms (one inside for the colder days up here in Dundee), Ideal candidates are Hunter Pilot 27 / Southerly 95 and the rare in the UK, Jouet yachts, all of which are classed as Deck Saloons, My budget is 25k-30k. After looking at the market its clear that UK based boats are more expensive, maybe its something to do with having an indoor helm you can retire too with our predictably poor summers and I can also see how these are harder to shift in warmer climates. If the difference was just a few thousand I wouldn't even bother looking but the differences are literally 10k which cant be ignored and its just 1 off boats I must have seen 10-15 which all suited

I have spotted 1 boat which at 20,000 Euro is £14k cheaper than the equivalent back home, I have had some HD photo`s which apart from some minor interior cosmetic things look very good, the gellcoat is original, the boat has a good documented maintenance schedule and ticks the majority of my boxes, the only problem is it is in Cadiz

I am looking for potential pitfalls when purchasing a boat from Spain, the Spanish broker tells me the VAT is paid and that he has the documentation to prove full ownership etc

Second problem is Transport, visiting the boat is easy £98 for a flight out of Edinburgh, but getting her back to Dundee would be a headache or maybe an adventure? but is my 3 year mobo experience and virtually non existent sailing experience going to be sufficient to get here back in say 2-3 months? What other options do I have?

Advice appreciated

A trip from Cadiz to Scotland sounds like a fine way to spend a few weeks and the lack of sailing experience could be overcome with crew selection.
But the reality is that unless you are confident of the boat's traits in all conditions and you are 100% happy with her equipment you should consider other options.
Better, in my view, to get to know the boat and have things break in home waters.
Overland delivery would probably work out much the same price taking everything into consideration.

There are a few options, as you have said.

If the boat really is a bargain and saves you £10k then you might consider transporting by lorry to Calais. Others may have more accurate figures but I would guess this will take up about £5k of your saving.

If you choose to sail back via Biscay you would be best advised to have a couple of crew who know what they are doing. Biscay is not the only problem but just getting up the Portuguese coast can be difficult once the Portuguese Trades kick in around mid-May.

Another option would be to flesh out your sailing skills by taking her through the Med as far as Sete and then through the French inland waterways to Le Havre or Calais. By then you should have ironed out niggles and be prepared for the East Coast trip to Dundee.

Alternatively, leave her where she is for a couple of years and enjoy the sunshine!

Good luck with your decision.

Yes, there are usually no problems with documentation buying in Spain - just make sure in addition to the normal checks that the vendor removes it from the Spanish register (assuming it is Spanish owned) then you can register on the SSR.

Transport to Scotland could well eat up most of the "saving". Delivery by sea with a professional crew would be at least £3000 plus the cost of equipping and preparing for the voyage and take about 3 weeks. Road transport would be between £5-6k including cranage either end and take a week. There are plenty of delivery companies and boat transport firms hungry for business, so easy to get some quotes before you go to the expense of flying out to look at the boat.

Did you also check for the Riviera Konsort or Konsort Duo? They would be inside your budget, Westerly of course, plenty of space below and the Duo sails well I understand.

I had a Konsort Duo for a few years. Almost perfect for UK climate. Never, ever wore oilies!

Only downside is the rather restricted dinette arrangement which is not to everyones taste. However, this layout affords brilliant views at anchor - or in a Marina. IMO this layout is more than compensated for by a huge forecabin and equally comfortable heads with very efficient shower.

We were aboard ours for six weeks sailing from Hartlepool to Beaumaris. We had a further two four week holidays cruising South West Ireland.

Might struggle to secure one for under £30k - an indication of how they hold their value.

Yes I looked also at Konsort Duo but they seemed to be out of budget and short on berths

Konsort Duo 5 Berth
Jouet 940 6 Berth, 2 decent size aft berths in seperate cabins
Jouet 1040 7 Berth
Southely 95/100 6 Berth
Hunter Pilot 27 6 Berth

Would normally only be 2-4 onboard but would be good to be able to cram in 6 if needed, any other suggestions welcomed
