Good evening all
I hope you are all well.
Buying a bigger boat - what size is manageable to tow with VW T6 Multivan to lake and sea?
At the moment I own Cap Camarat 5.5CC.
Want to go bigger, 6.5cc or 7.5cc.
Is the 7.5cc to big to launch on a daily trips?
Is the 7.5cc to legal to be towed with own vehicle on the European Roads? Width, length, etc.
Please advice. Thank you in advance.

VW Transporter towing capacity:
Unbraked towing capacity on all T6 and T6.1 Transporters is 750kg.
Braked towing capacity ranges from 1,800kg to 2,500kg on SWB panel van models
from 2,200kg to 2,500kg on LWB panel van models.
Kombi models range from 2,200kg to 2,500kg braked, regardless of body length.

Looks to depend on your VW type as well as your driving licence.
Note, the "dry weight" is shown, this will not include any additions, such as fuel, water, instruments, engine & the weight of the trailer - add another half tonne at least.

*Edit -
The maximum length for a trailer towed by a vehicle weighing up to 3,500kg is 7 metres. This length does not include the A-frame.
3500kg is the maximum mass of the towed load. Vehicles that have this capability are few and far between - Land/Range Rovers (proper ones), Land Cruisers, Nissan Patrol etc.

7m is the maximum length of the trailer, but not the load. The load can overhang significantly. Here is a 9.2m boat on a 7m trailer, which is road legal...

Yes...
Which is why I started with the towing capacities of the VW T1
and the quote is taken directly from the DVLA - hence the links

CAP CAMARAT 7.5 CC specs
 • Length overall:7.37 m / 24'2"
 • Hull length:6.96 m / 22'10"
 • Hull Beam:2.52 m / 8'3""
 • Weight:1440 kg / 3175 Lbsl
I love the 7.5cc, but.
Is 7.5cc too big to launch and retrieve on a daily trips?
Will there be a big difference towing 5.5cc and 7.5cc on the roads?
These are questions that bother me.
I'm comfortable with the 5.5cc.
I drive / tow the 5.5cc to Croatia every year. 5.5cc is little on the small side to go island to island, hence thinking bigger.

I don't want to go 6.5cc and then need to change again.
In Croatia I launch the boat and boat stays 30 days in the water.
In Switzerland I launch and retrieve the boat daily.
If 7.5cc is manageable for daily trips to the swiss lakes, then its a no brainer.

Thank you all for you time in creating what is a very informative thread. Please continue the conversation and your views.

To that question, I'd say yes. Not basing this on the legality side of things (n.b. everyone in the country now has B+E endorsements on their licences - UK Gov changed that about a year ago). However, that's a big bit of boat to be launching and recovering regularly. One thing to do start/end of the season, but I suspect it'd take the edge off the relaxing day knowing you'd have to do that when you get back, and tow it home.

Not saying it's impossible of course; people have towed and launched bigger and heavier boats, but it's the can vs would want to debate: you can live in Scotland and drive down to sail in the Solent every weekend (for example), but would you want to? Some yes, but most probably not.

7m is not the maximum length of trailer when carrying an indivisible load - something which can not be broken down into separate parts..

Thank you all for your messages. I had a fair amount of reading and thinking on this subject and It looks like 6.5cc all the way in this case. If I had powerful car / truck maybe the decision will be 7.5cc, but I start leaning towards the 6.5cc.
