A year ago, I got a lot of good advice from many of you about buying a 2nd boat . For good reasons (laziness on my part and lack of pusaisiveness) , I delayed a decision until this year.

Oh dear , I am still confused !

I am close to buying a Portofino 400 but the good lady said ' But do we really need something that we can sleep on that much?'...What about that nice Cranchi Endurance 39 or that Superhawk 48. OH NO.

So the questions remain...

1) We expect in the first year to use the boat primarily as Day Boat in South of France France for us , occasionally plus either a 12 year old or 20 year old (male). We have friends (we hope) who will come and party. The VERY occasional overnight stay will be required ( I hope)

2) We are fundamentally lazy and like creature comforts - but are anything but Flashy

3) Ease of use and Med friendly are good as are ease of handling

4) We can afford it BUT our plan would be to trade up to Major Cruiser if we can justify in a couple of years ..

Although I am (reasonably) experienced, I don't need any over complexity.

Any advice on Model/Age range £100-£160k...with an obvious preference for value !

All help gratefully received

why no to the superhawk or cranchi? As primarily a day boat the Superhawk seems about perfect (particularly with triple yanmar surface drives!). I'm sure you've looked at most of the other options, Princess V40, Targa 40 etc. I'd have thought that if you stick to these sort of boats you won't go too far wrong with any of them.

My budget was similar and bought a Camargue 46 last year which is perfect for what I wanted with loads of space but I did want 4 people to sleep on it regularly so probably not the right one for you.

Flashy? You cant get much flashier than a Superhawk 48 especially if its got triple engines. For chrissakes dont buy a petrol one and make sure its got a bowthruster. The Cranchi 39 got a rave review in MBY and I think you'd get a new one for your price range. I've heard that the Portofino 400 was not one of Sunseeker's best boats; apparently the smaller engined versions struggle to get on the plane but, as you've found out its a lot more roomy inside than the other 2
You might take a look at the Princess V40/42 and the Sunseeker Mustique 42 which would be my preference in this price range as it has proper shaftdrives rather than sterndrives or V drives but it will be older than any of the others. For something a bit different and more gizmos per pound type luxury take a look at the Searay 400 Sundancer
As with any secondhand purchase, particularly as you intend to trade up shortly and you want to minimize depreciation, buy diesel rather than petrol and a well known make. Any of the boats mentioned fit that bill.

Thanks very much for your advice. It looks as if we are homing in on a Cranchi Endurance. I am very conciuos of the factthat we will want to trade up when we are a little more experienced and that boat seems to fit all our wishes. I would love to have been able to compare to a Mustique but good ones seem VERY rare around the Med.

Again Many Thanks

Thanks very much for your opinions. I love the 46 but she thinks it's too much money for a first boat, particularly as she's not convinced we'd use that much accomodation. We are now focusing in on a specific Cranchi Endurance 39.

Now I need to know how much to offer !
