Hi Folks,

Thinking of spending Saturday night anchored in the Butley River. Any advice regarding access, as I believe entrance is rather shallow, and anchoring in this spot, would be appreciated. Boat length 28 ft and draught 1.6m .

Many thanks

Rob

I spent a very pleasant day aground up there a few weeks ago!

The entrance is shallow but it soon deepens out by a meter or so. There is a deep bit near the old quay with the ruined building on the port side. When I was there there was a couple in a Hillyard who had been there many times and said it is full of holes nad bumps. they anchored on a bump!

I went aground an hour before HW because I turned toward the stbd, more shelving, bank when I weighed anchor. A very nice spot, though.

If you are feeling adventurous , I am told that there is good fodder and drink at the The Froize Inn at Chillesford.

You set of from the quay. At this time of year you will probably need a pathfinder GPS, floodlights, waders, and probably be under 30 to survive it.

Some have come back though.

Many years ago we anchored near Boyton dock & walked to the "Bell" pub at Boyton the signs said it was only one mile but it seemed like a lot more. Tiny pub but great beer & company, Anyone know if its survived?

I haven't been there for, er, 30 years, but we sometimes moored to two anchors to keep us in the stream. Can be messy to do, but effective and fun.

One of my favourite spots on the E coast, lovely & peaceful and out of the main drag up to Orford. Great anchorage as others have said, reasonable water up to the dock and it does deepen towards the dock from the entrance. There are a couple of fairly subtle withies marking the entrance but pretty straight forward to get in. If you fancy an alternative walk then take a dinghy upstream to the pedestrian ferry crossing then along paths and tracks into Orford (2 miles) for beer & food options, returning via the sea walls takes a little longer and is more exposed.

The pub closed in 2005/2006. It was a private residence when we tried to find it in 2007.
