Butley River shrine

We are anchored by the white cross with plastic flowers on the Butley salting. I was told the story behind this but have forgotten. Can anybody update me please?
It looks well cared for.

IIRC it was the favourite fishing spot of a local chap. One evening he was found dead in that spot, having suffered a heart attack. He was only in his 40s.
