I recently aquired a clinker sailing dinghy which I'm hoping to get going next season, but would like to know more about. I've managed to identify her as a Burnham twelve-footer, built according to the plate by Burnham (Somerset) Motor Boats. The number 5913 is stamped into the transom. Does anyone know anything about the class? Thanks...

I've just found some information that may be of interest in a book of dinghy classes. Apparently the Burnham Twelve-Footer was raced as a class at Nelson in Lancashire. It's described as a seaworthy, stable centreboard one-design with a performance similar to a Flying Moth (?), although slower than the West Kirby Star or 11ft Gull. In 1949 a gunter-rigged Burnham Twelve-Footer cost £139 and a bermudan-rigged boat cost £148. A larger version, the Burnham Fourteen-Footer was also built, which had 104sqft of sail, 7in side decks and a mahogany marine ply foredeck.

Hope this is of interest.

Thanks very much, think that's the same as a book I was lent- that's about all I know. I'd love to find out which rig mine was built with, as it'd be fun to put her back. At the moment she's got a lug rig with bowsprit... being as she's got a hull no. it'd be great to find out when she was built and who for but I think I'm on a pretty long shot unless anyone knows where I could find any of the boatbuilder's records.
Are any others out there sailing?
