We are planning the above trip soon, & whilst we have all the charts etc, am looking for any local knowledge, things to be aware of etc. Motor boat passage cruising anywhere between 20 & 30 knots. All info gratefully received.:)

Should be a pretty uneventful trip. We came past Lowestoft and down to Shotley last Sept and didn't come across anything out of the ordinary. I'd keep just East of Gunfleet Sands, then East of Roughs Towers. Then just run down the coast, keeping the usual watch for pot markers, although we didn't see any particular "hot spots" on the trip down.

Interesting, how far out do they lay pots as a rule.

When we came down the East coast, Cromer was pretty bad, i found keeping 5 or 6 miles offshore helped.

There are currently plenty around Cork Sands, Stone Banks have a few, lots Harwich side of Felixstowe harbour and lots close in along the coast off Frinton/Walton. Felixstowe pier area is also an area to watch. Not seen any in the areas of Gunfleet (South end), The Towers or along the Shipwash recently.

A route I have done several times......
IIRC
Spitway
Wallet (pots)
Cutler (pots here)
Orford (pots)
you need to keep a good look out for pots pretty much the whole journey and the offshore route wont be a lot better....just extra miles.
and straightforward to Lowestoft.
Lowestoft bridge only swings at given times....in the almanac.
You need to check the bridge is swinging before mutford lock (they had lots of issues a couple of years back) and book a time with the lock for passage into Oulton Broad

And if its a weekend......I'm free :D

Lots of pots less than 3 miles out and plenty of nets. I reckon I'm safe to go over the nets at 2' 6" draft but haven't dared risk it.

We draw about the same, also would not dare risk it, we stay well clear.

I agree with Doug that you need to keep a sharp lookout the whole trip, but we always keep a sharp lookout. We did definitely find less buoys at 5 or 6 miles out, but we only did the trip once, end of last Sept.

Broads trip

We do the trip twice a year from Tichmarsh. I find it better to go through GT Yarmouth no locks no fuss Its only about an hour on from Lowestoft my Princess 32 will only do 9kts at best plus you can go south or north Broads.Lots of pots of the mouth of the Deben & Southwald If you go through Lowestoft call the harbour master up thay get the hump if you dont .Have a nice trip we always have a great time

It sounds like you're going to go through lowestoft harbour so i suggest waiting for a large ship to come through and you don't have to pay for the bridge, you can just sneak in there.

Are you stopping off at oulton broad?

Whilst on the broads, i'd watch out for sailors aswell, like me, some parts of the broads can get quite narrow, plus there's the tour boat which is the slowest and most unmanoueverable (sp) vessle on the broads probably.

Plus lots of the broads has speed limits.

Have you checked that you're not planning on going when the motorboat racing is on? They only get oulton a few times a year and you'd have to navigate between races.

no cost

There is no cost to pass through the Lowestoft bridge, the bridge opens for commercial shipping when ever they require to go through the inner harbour or sea ward, private vessels have to what until the specified opening times.

Oulton Lock was £8.00 last time I did it.
Its nice to stop there after what will be a long journey and relax for a night, rather than another 30 minutes or so more to Gt Yarmouth then negotiate both bridges to open and the nearest decent place to moor is the Berney arms.

I will raid the kids money box before we go :D
