Hi all,

I need to get some concentrated bumps and grinds practice for my little 22 ft boat based at Milford Haven. Any ideas on island pontoons I can practice at without too many other boats around? I thought there might be one at Dale, but wasn't sure.

Cheers,

Dennis

Do you mean practice coming alongside/mooring? If so there are several pontoons in the Haven you might use.

The Dale visitor pontoon tends to be quite busy.

What about the pontoon at Hazelbeach, close to the Ferry House Inn? We parked there for an hour on Monday (i.e. two days ago), at 0900, and had the pontoon to ourselves. We'd called to collect friends staying at the Inn and were surprised that no-one else was about.

Whereabouts in the Haven are you based?

You might also ask your question on the Bristol Channel Forum.

Sorry, yes, I mean coming alongside. It's a slang expression I got used to using in the Navy. The boat is based at Milford Marina.

There's a pontoon outside the lock at Milford. At Dale there is a pontoon not attached to the land and a pontoon for walking ashore. There are also two pontoons at Lawrenny - one for the yacht station and one for the pub. Lawrenny Reach has lots of current so will sharpen up your handling!

A problem with the Mackeral Stage (the pontoon immediately outside Milford Dock) is that it's usually busy. MoodySabre's suggestion about the Lawrenny pontoons is sensible but they are both intended for dinghies so may not be appropriate for a 22' boat.

Have you considered using the upper part of the Dock basin? There are usually several old hulks up there you could practice coming alongside. Have a quiet word with one of the Marina staff, not Eira but one of the lads.

The key criterion may be choosing the right time to practice. Unless there is a lock in or out, or freeflow, the Dock basin is usually quiet. The Haven itself rarely has many leisure boats moving before 0900. If we go out or return early in the morning the place seems deserted.

Pretty much as above........the deep water pontoon at Dale should be quiet during the week, but does get busy on weekends.
We had a lot of time in the top end of the marina after doing various work on the engine and a quick call on the vhf always resulted in clearance to do a bit of circuit bashing up there. If there is any clear wall space I am sure you would be allowed to use that to practice your skills.

Thanks all. Will see what the traffic is like tomorrow and if the dock is a no go will try Dale or Lawrenny.
