Bullimore\'s attempt at the record

Am I missing a trick here or is he planning to sail a much shorter distance by staying south and going around the world almost entirely in the southern ocean?

Re: Bullimore\'s attempt at the record

I'm sorry but I think the mans a "prat". In the past he's displayed a distinct lack of seamanship skills. To me he seems to have discovered the power of the "media" and is giving it his all.

Peter.

, MacArthur set a new world record for a single-handed non-stop circumnavigation in the trimaran B&Q/Castorama, during which she sailed 27,354 nautical miles at an average speed of 15.9 knots. Her time of 71 days, 14 hours, 18 minutes 33 seconds is the fastest ever circumnavigation of the world by a single-hander

Tony B is planning on doing 23000 miles ... I think he's 4k miles short ...

Re: Bullimore\'s attempt at the record

Um no, you can't just go round any old how : there are specific rules, which include (I think)

crossing all lines of longitude
crossing two opposite points on the planet
crossing outward track

It might also include going south around cape horn
and cape leuwin, not sure.

If bullimore dosn't go as far north as macarthur (to lizard-ouessant) ...then mebbe he will have to stay further north to cover opposite poles? And not be able to nip tound the south pole as tightly as she could. Or, extra macarthur mileage may well have come from going west to almost brazil and back enroute cape of good hope? not sure.

Anyway i hope he doesn't have massive wind at all cos i am due in the atlantic in a few weeks and wd like a force four just like on the nice charts that fatipa loaned me with small feathers onnem and not at all BOLD which looks much more ooer serious: I think he should have gone earlier, like late Nov or decemeber with lots of atlantic gales and not much ice in southern ocean.

Re: Bullimore\'s attempt at the record

When he finally heads out of Hobart, Bullimore and his 102-ft (31m) catamaran Doha will track east into the Indian Ocean, with Cape Horn the first waypoint, onto the Azores, past the Cape of Good Hope and back again to Hobart.

If he heads east expecting to find the Indian Ocean, it may take him a bit longer than he expects /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Re: Bullimore\'s attempt at the record

forgive my lack of knowledge on this, but I always thought to qualify for 'round the world' you had to cross the equator twice? As well as all lines of longitude.

Re: Bullimore\'s attempt at the record

in order to sail around two anitpodal points he will have to sail across the equator twice.

one antipodal point will be in northern hemisphere, he starts in southern, sails into northern crossing equator (1), rounds anitpodal point, sails back into southern cross equator (2).

'I think the man's a prat' etc quote Boatmaster.

If there's one thing that pisses me off about the contributions from experienced people who should know better it's that sort of attitude. Boatmaster's biog is below - I'll try and survive without your kind of help thanks! Tony could die trying in the next few weeks pushing boundaries that I recoil from so let's be charitable to a man who has achieved much and is still trying when most are drawing pensions.

'I hold a DTI Boatmasters Lic with COP(from commercial fishing days) based Ramsgate.YM Offshore with commercial endosement.RYA Powerboat Instructor and ICC tester cert for power and sail. RNLI SeaCheck advisor. I'm always willing to help anyone'.

Re: Bullimore\'s attempt at the record

This puts me in a difficult position as I think the man's a prat as well - agreed totally with Boatmans' suggestion that he has found out how to manipulate the media.

In one sense 'good luck to him', but he has brought offshore and ocean sailing into disrepute in the past with his 'exploits'. I know of people who have sailed with him who won't go near a boat he is on now.

Perhaps I wish I had his secrets as to how to get lots of money out of large companies to sponsor his efforts?
