The throttle on my boat is rather stiff, I broke one of the cable holder at the teleflex lever end this weekend! I found that it is the lever in the quadrant on the back of engine that is the culprit. I can move it by hand but its stiff requiring around 20 + kg pull to move it.
I'm a little wary of dismanteling it, but suspect that thats whats needed, as there is obvious rust showing in various places on the mechanism, (it got sprayed by salt water from a faulty stern gland a year ago). Does anyone have any tips for freeing the lever up, A little worried there may be springs and settings that dont want to be fiddled with!) and can anyone recomend a place I can get a new cable bracket for the teleflex unit, I'll make it if I have to.

I spoke to the very helpfull man at Cutler Marine yesterday and he suggested that putting some oil on the mechanisim and working it back and forth to ease the stiffness was the sesnsible first step. So once I have reasembled the Teleflex I'll see if it responds to the treatement!
Any other tips gratefully accepted.

Disconnect and drop in a container full of light oil-TQF is very good. It is what I lubricated motorcycle control cables with-light enough to get in, and a high quality lubricant.

Worth a punt.

I repaired one years ago-the cross pin for the neutral selection broke, leaving it stuck in ahead, even though astern was selected. First Mate was not very impressed..........................

It was riveted together with the Mazack-monkey metal-extrusions from the body going through the backplate and then pressed over.

I drilled them out, separated the halves, repaired the sheared off pin, filed the mating surfaces flat and then drilled and tapped it M5 and used screws to hold it together.

Saved £100.00 plus VAT IIRC.

Good Luck.

not had this problem with my Bukh, (touching wood) but drips of diesel in the right place is as good as most of these freeing agents,

good luck

Thanks Scotty, was scratching my head as to what oil to use, some drip of Diesel followed by a few drips later of bicycle chain oil.
Rotrax , the Teleflex is working well it was the bracket that held the base of the throttle cable to the Teleflex that failed and I have managed to fashion a new one out of a bit of scrap gate latch!

Hope to refit this weekend and will report back.

I would give the very helpfull guys at Bukh UK in Poole a call and they will talk you through this. Google Bukh UK for the number. Parts may be expensive but their advice is usually free:-)

Good Oh-well done!

Working the throttle with some oil applied to it has removed the stiffness in the throttle, and my modified bracket all assembled well. I am pleased to report all the operation of the throttle and gear lever is now back to normal.
