Anyone ever had a problem with a Bukh saildrive? The gears at the bottom end of my 36SME saildrive seem to have self-destructed! The drive is just 2 years old but it would appear that somehow the propshaft has moved in the housing allowing the bevel gear to hit the side of the casing and strip the edges of its teeth. Anyone else had this problem or similar?

Don't expect anyone with a BUKH to admit to ever having a problem. Instead brace yourself to hear how smooth they run due to the huge exposed thing spinning dangerously at the front!

Sounds like a bearing related problem, but I have no experience of this drive. In the absence of visible external damage, and the presence of service history, it looks like you sould approach your vendor, whom the Sales of Goods Act (or whatever it is called now) says should sell you something that is 'durable', and which the EU defines as up to 6 years. Before you start arguing, ask them how long it should last. I assume they will say 20 years, which means your starting point is a 90% reduction off the repair / replacement. You could also try tweeking BUKH's tail, and see if they will contribute significantly towards the remedy.

I wish you better luck than you have had so far.

People with Bukh's do have problems. The beauty of the Bukh is in part the access to the professional engineers at the UK office of Bukh. Give them a ring and they will provide what ever information/ advice you want. Cll them on 01202 668840.
