Well today ordered some parts for the overhaul being carried out which were as follows:

Piston Rings x 2
Exhaust Elbow and Flange
4 x Valve Springs
Full Gasket Set
Nozzle Insert
Counter Nut for flange
Bearing Shells for both pistons

Grand Total an eye watering £1121 and some change. Knew Bukh parts were expensive but bordering on the ridiculous. Still have to budget in mounts and servicing of fuel pump and injectors. Hope its all worth it when it goes back together. Starting to think new engine might have been a better option.

Main reason for strip down was there was a rattle coming from the bottom of the engine or thereabouts. Couldn't find anything obvious and all the parts im changing all looked very good considering the age of the engine. No play in anything apart from slight float on one of the end weights. Perplexing to say the least. Hoping once it all goes back that rattle wont be there or i am at a loss as to what it could possibly be as everything checked for excessive play and nothing found to indicate source.

The piston rings are nothing special, very common 85mm bore with a tapered chrome top ring. Thorntons could no doubt supply for a fraction of the OE cost.

The valve springs, unless corroded or broken would surely have been reuseable-its only a low RPM plodder after all.

I freed off the rings in my DV20, put back the old shells and just dealt with the problems which were poor valve seats and stuck rings. The diesel experts tested the injectors, found them stuck open and fitted non Bosch nozzles at less than half the cost of the Bosch OE.

I took a head gasket with me to NZ- glad I did as it would have cost 80% more there. I had to buy manifold and thermo housing gaskets in NZ which were really expensive for what they are.

I hope your noise goes away-it ought to with all those new bits!

I seem to remember another poster complaining of a rattle from the front of the engine. Culprit was a balance weight, but due to oil starvation. Good move to check all the oilways are clear. On my own engine, during a head rebuild, I found that little banjo on the front of the cylinder was blocked - which was why the valve gear was always dry. I fixed it but ever since, the oil pressure light comes on when idling!

Just taken fuel pump and injector valves to be checked and serviced. Both injectors shot and fuel pump needs refurbishing £300. Told they will be as new when I pick them up tomorrow. Didn't really notice any fuel problems so it just goes to show. The guy doing them who is well respected asked what filters I was using which are Fram and he told me to get rid and use Delphi as better filtration.

+1 I don't know who you were speaking to but Rochester City Diesel gave me the same advice some years ago (his language towards pattern parts was a bit more colourful...) and the reason I was there was because a pattern diesel nozzle on a Delphi injector had split across its face

The exact same place. Used them before and very happy with his work and impressively clean workshop.
