I have a 20hp and add no more than 1/3 pint (or whatever that is in metric!) per season, using the motor an 'average' amount. While cruising full time, this increased to around 1 1/2pints per year, partly as a result of course, of more motoring, but also engine charging when needing to supplement the solar panels and windgen.
Oil was changed once a year (season) for normal sailing, but twice a year when full time cruising.
All the above increased substantially (sorry, no specific figures available) after the rings seized in the the Cape Verdes following the discharge of a powder auto extinguisher, despite stripping the engine and freeing them up. I haven't run the motor other than for testing since it's full rebuild as part of my major refit, but with new liners, pistons, rings etc, anticipate going back to at least as frugal a consumption as previously!
I have a DV20 which is about 23 years old aswell, and although I have only had 2 seasons worth of experience, I have found that I have not needed to top up at all throughout the season.
I had an old bukh 10 in my previous boat, it used a lot of oil, it had to be topped up during a 10 hour passage. The oil leaked, not burned. Bilges were full of oil!
I replaced the engine with a brand new Kubuto.
The old Bukh could have been reconditioned, but as it had a dynostart, I decided to bite the bullet and get a modern engine. The new engine was much lighter, which improved sailing performance as well.
