My Bukh DV 20 has to be turned over a good 30 times before she starts. She hates being cold but after she warms up a bit from turning over she starts easy. Now I live in Hawaii. How cold could she be?? I got two 12v turning her now but Im thinking of combing two sets of two 6v. I dont know if she has a pre-heat. I dont think she does. Its a 70's circa Bukh.

I have DV10, circa 1975. She turns over once and starts, even here in the chilly winter Medway - BUT not before I had the head skimmed, new valve guides, new valves and springs. Prior to that i had to use Easy Start.

It sounds as though your compression is down. Can you get a diesel mechanic to do a compression test for you? It is likely that the engine just needs a good decoking and valve grind. A diesel with good compression should fire with the first injection of fuel.
Peter.

As has been said, could be compression is down due to wear or poorly seating valves.

Is the engine spinning fast enough on the starter? Bukhs dont like being spun slowly from cold if the starter or its connections are at all iffy. Mine was like yours until I had the starter reconditioned. It seemed Ok before, but the few extra revs the recond motor gave meant instant cold-start.

Check not only the starter itself but the connections - particularly earth return which always seemed dodgy on mine until I put an extra earthing strap directly back to the battery.

Which firm did this overhaul for you? Reason I ask is that the clutch on my starter slips. I haven't dismantled it yet but if it needs new parts rather than just cleaning, I'd like to know where I can get them from.
