Have just discovered that ASAP Supplies now have a small range of bits for Bukh engines. This includes pencil anodes, oil and fuel filters. I like dealing with the guys at Bukh who I have always found very helpful, but .... £2.79 instead of £8.20 for the pencil anode and £3.19 instead of £9.04 for an oil filter. Just thought I'd share this.

The oil filter is a standard part, available at any motor factors. I dont have numbers here but I expect you can find them with google.

[/ QUOTE ]Not quite correct. You can certainly get a filter that physically fits but when one compares the specifications of the filters one finds considerable differences in the degree of filtration and bypass pressures. It is not a case of "one size fits all"

The trick is to find the specs for the OEM filter and then cross reference those to find a compatible non-OEM filter.

I went through this process a few years ago and was shocked at the differences in the filtration properties of the various so-called "compatible" filters.

MAIN FUEL FILTER (on engine) (with drain plug )
1. Crossland 5005
2. Fram P4520
3. Bosch 4099

ENGINE OIL FILTER
Any of the following filters should fit:
1. Crossland 691
2. Fram PH 46
3. Fram PH 966B
4. Wipac CA 130
5. TJ FB 5311
6. Motorcraft EFL 84
7. Unipart GFE 240
8. Purolator PC 201
9. Coopers COO 285
10. Mann and Hummel W7 12/6

For the sake of a couple of beer token each season is it worth risking bearing or crank shaft failure/damage on £4k or £5k worth of engine? It is your engine so your call!

I'm not sure if you are saying that all these oil filters fit - but don't use them.
I agree they fit, I use PH46 or equivalnet that the small motor factor has in stock and chnage them every 50-60 hours along with the oil. The filters cost £2-3 pounds and the oil no more than £10.
Given that all these filters are used every day in higher tech car engines than my 23 yo Bukh 20 hp I find it difficult to believe my regime is ruining the engine.

They will (should) all physically fit however the characteristics of the filters are quite different. Your engine - your call.

IIRC the last OEM filters I bought were about £3.00 so for the sake of a couple of bob I'll stick with OEM supplied filters on my 20yr old Bukh (not even run in yet - still a "young one").

FWIW, according to the chap who was kind enough to do the research for me, the Mann and Hummel W7 12/6 was the nearest but the bypass pressure was still a little high.

As I said for the sake of, literally, a few pence I'll stick with the OEM filters and as I bought 20 I don't need to worry for a few years, even changing them every 100 hours. As for the engine mounted fuel filter I bought 5 so that is about 10~15 years worth.

The primary filters are standard Lucas/CAV filters so no worries there.

I agree with Cliff. I have a Buhk and whilst all the filter companies are happy to quote filters for cars and truck none of them would quote filters for the BUHK. Buhk must get their filters made for them and they would not bother if there were existing ones that would suit. Buhk use johson pumps and do not disquise the fact. As for anodes, not all the Zincs are of thr same purity, how long do the ASAP ones last ASJ1 compared to the Buhk ones.

I have just had an e-mail from Buhk Denmark and they have said that their filters are made to their specification because the standard ones made by the filter companies do not conform to their requirements. So as Cliff says, its your engine you could be damaging.
