On day 2 of our recent end of work season cruise discovered we were losing oil at an alarming rate into the engine drip tray. Many curses, scratched and scraped arms later owing to the incredible lack of access I tracked the problem down to a corroded oil pipe which carries hot oil from the engine to the oil cooler. This pipe is approx 10" long and 'S' shaped. It lives below the oil cooler at the very base of the engine on the starboard side. This has proved impossible to remove as there is insufficient clearance to get a spanner onto the nuts at either end. Over witer I am investing in a dremmel type thingy with which to cut through the bulkhead which is really only there as far as I can see to hold the sound proofing in place so as to get access and free the old pipe.
A call to BUkh UK (those great fellows) reveals that these replacement oil pipes are no longer made for this engine and the new 'jury-rig' replacement system involving banjo bolts etc comes out at over £300 to repace a 10" oil pipe! This seems a bit steep to say the least. I have sealed the leak with good quality amalgamating tape backed up with s/s jubilee clips which seem to be holding the flood back for now.
So. I am asking if anyone has knowledge of spares available for this engine, a 1979/80 Bukh DV36 (The DV48 has the sane system) or whether these pipes can be satisfactorily repaired and if so, how? The boat is in the South of France.
All thoughts and advice will, as always, be greatfully received. Thanks in advance.
