Hi guys,
First post having just bought an Old Gaffer to restore. I feel that I might be on here a lot!
First Question: My yacht has an old BUKH DV20 unit which has got to go. Does anyone know where I can get hold of a set of drawings (with dimensions) for the unit? I want to play with the space a little and shop around for a suitable replacement; possibly a Beta bz482.
Second question: My decks are, apparently, covered with Trackmark but a google search fails to bring up anything useful. Can anyone suggest a source or a suitable alternative - it's all got to come off so another covering would be fine.
Many thanks

This is what you need for non-slip deck covering. Very expensive for what it is. You can buy it from the makers or some chandlers sell it, e.g. Marine Superstore.

Why has the BUKH 20 "got to go"? One of the best marine engines there is.

An alternative deck covering would be dynel. This is an aramid cloth which you lay down and saturate with epoxy resin. If you don't actually fill the weave it makes a very good antislip coating. With the Bukh, enquire about getting it either overhauled or reconditioned; it will be cheaper than buying a new engine and will fit back in the boat so much easier. If it is reluctant top start, it might just need decarbonising [decoking]. It is quite surprising what that will do for a diesel.
Peter.

I cant comment on the Bukh but as far as trakmark goes it is an old fashioned product that i am surprised is still on the market it is stuck down with what amounts to a heavy duty evostick and often comes unstuck leaving voids and causing rot.
Better to have a good marine ply deck with glass cloth & epoxy effectively armour plated & lasts for years.

At Hamble Sea Scouts we have a DV20 fitted to our Gaff Ketch which is still going strong. But the gearbox has just thrown in its lot, so we would be very interested in the gearbox if it is available.

The gearboxes used by Bukh were/are pretty bullet proof, which do you have? - the BW6 or BW7?

Thanks for all the replies, wise words to think about. My main gripe about the DV20 is it's height above the mountings which is giving me some headaches with the sole of the well. I'd like the engine under the sole and 200mm or so would enable me to do it. But Peterduck is right in that the service/recon option would probably be a lot cheaper. I feel that there might be some attractive mahogany casing work coming on!

I don't know which gearbox we have. The only identification number I can find on it is '3030201007 178' if this helps.

The problem is that the gearbox is stuck in forward gear and will not select neutral or reverse. Well, now I have dismantled the gearbox I can see that the problem was caused by the oil leaking out and the forward gear cone sticking to the gear. I have freed the cone and there appears to be no damage so I will reassemble the gearbox, with new oil seals and oil and see if it is still working. You are quit right the gearbox is substantial and it looks like there was no damage caused by the low oil level. I know to use SAE 30 oil but I don’t know the quantity if anyone tell me.

The standard box fitted to the Bukh 20 needs approx 0.4L or 0.7pints of SAE 20 or 30, and should be filled until it flows out of the oil overflow plug - according to the book. A workshop manual is available from Bukh agents (at a price!)
