Hi

I have a Super Seal with a Bukh DV10 inboard diesel. I think the keywsitch is faulty and I'd like to replace it. The cost of a Bukh replacement seems very high and I'm interested to know if there are any alternatives to Bukh's own switch?

Thanks in advance.

Any ignition switch will do the job, just check you have depth and width for replacement. check your terminal configeration and reconnect and your away. Make sure, if multi terminal that you use run (ign +) and crank +, leeveing the aux terminal redundent, (unless you want to use for extras, but it will be isolated on crank position)

This isn't strictly true, as the Bukh switch has an anticlockwise position to stop the engine (also sounds the alarm) - terminal 58 on the switch. You would need a switch from a marine engine with an fuel cut off solenoid rather than a mechanical cut off. Otherwise you would need a seperate switch. Are you sure it's the switch that's faulty?

The Bukh switch has 2 extra psoitons on it - if there is a thermostart fitted. A conventional switch will do provided it can be made to fit the hole, but you have to provide for separate switching for the Thermostart, and a switch to operate the stop solenoid (mounted at the back of the crankcase extension above the gearbox).

You can of course forget the stop solenoid, and rig a pull stop from the decompression lever to stop the engine, so that if you dpo not have a thermostart either, a conventional ignition switch will do nicely.

The switches are such a price I can only think they are supplied by Volvo!

oops sorry if missled, my fault, mind you, you could always use a smart relay so when returned to off position you could have automatic shut down and could choose your time lapse. Still I was still wrong, did I do a good job of trying Bxxxxit my way out

But .... the alarm function is particularly unreliable. I burn't out a stop solenoid and nearly set fire to the boat due to overheating wiring when I stopped at a busy fuel pontoon and failed to switch back to off.

Have now rewired so you have to BOTH switch the key to stop position AND press a seperate button to activate the stop solenoid. Intend to add cockpit start and stop buttons for use in locks, etc.

Hi I have a LSME DV10 Bukh - trying to work out the switch - we have a push button start arrangement
Vertical is off, one position to the left is stop, one position to the right is on
The question is once the engine is running do you leave the switch in the "on" position (one position to the right) or do you return the switch to the vertical off position

Almost certainly leave in the ON position or none of your warning lights and alarms ( or instruments if fitted) will work.

Check out Furneaux Riddall, http://www.furneauxriddall.com/, for possible replacement switches.

It should be possible to find an owners manual on line.
