Does any one know of a website that has the parts list for the Bukh 10 hp diesel engine? Is it common for the waterpump to leak into the starting gear mechanism?

If the shaft seals on the Johnson pump leak water travels along the shaft and enters the engine. I had this problem soon after I bought my boat. To guard against it overhaul the pump regularly and ensure the tell-tale holes between the seals are kept clear;if you see water coming out of them you know the seals have failed.

Yes it is if you do not keep the tell-tale holes clear. You need to check the needle bearing which supports the pump drive shaft ( which is removable )and renew if water damaged. Aso have a look at your oil and see if it is water contaminated - grey sludge, unexplained rise in level. Also take off the rocker cover and check for grey sludge as water tends to condense at the top of the engine. If you have water in your engine you will need to flush it all out to avoid serious damage. Servicing the water pump and replacing seals is futile if the needle bearing is damaged.
