Bukh 10 oil leak

The nut you indicate is the one that holds down the rocker cover. There is oil around inside the rocker box, of course, but I'm surprised that oil is leaking from under this top nut.
I'm almost certain that there is a washer underneath the nut on my Bukh. If you don't have one that may be the problem. I'd be careful about overtightening lest you strip the brass threads.

I have always found the guys on the end of the phone at Bukh extremely helpful - they may be able to advise whether this is a common symptom of some problem other than a poorly fitted nut.

I'm going to my boat tomorrow so PM me if you want me check how this nut is fitted on mine.

I agree with morgandlm, there should be a washer (I think it has a soft fibre incorporated) between the nut and the rocker cover. It's difficult to be sure from your pic, but it does look as if it's absent on your engine.

There is a lot of oil chucked about under the cover so it's almost inevitable that some will escape if these washers are missing. As mentioned, give Al or Norman a call at Bukh Diesel UK and they'll sort it for you.

There should be a slight vacuum inside the rocker box so no oil should be escaping. Check this by removing the oil filler plug and putting a piece of paper over the hole. It should stay where it is. If it blows off you have a problem with the engine. It could be the breather valve or the engine may need an overhaul with new rings etc.

What condition is the engine in generally? Is it using oil and smoking?

Two posible causes, both already described. We had both of them!

There should be a visible cork washer which when it finally perished we had the steady stream you mention. A 10p replacement solved that. The second cause is likely to be a clogged up breather valve. It needs a monstrous torque wrench to fix because of the huge torque setting on the bots you undo.

On the DV20 there is a vacuum valve under the rocker cover. This gets stuck and needs to be washed out with petrol or something similar. Once it is off you should hear it rattle if it is free. Having just looked at the book it shows that the DV10 has a slightly different part but it looks as if the same thing should apply, but a call to the guys at Bukh will provide the answer. If this is blocked then you may get a leak at the govenor which is pulled down by the vacuum and seals against the o-ring. This was my problem. I was getting quite a bit of oil from here.

Thanks everyone. Looks like I'll have to invest 15c in a washer. The engine, despite being 1979 starts beautifully every time. So I'll assume that it's nothing more serious. The oil is a trickle rather than a stream.
Many thanks

My engine, which runs perectly and uses no oil, does not have a cork washer there, and there is no oil leaking out. Should I be worried? Maybe the cork washer is there to prevent something being sucked in? /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

We needed it because of the fouled breather pipe. Maybe if you've got no leakage, you've got no problem?

Well my post was tongue-in-cheek but, seriously, as there is supposed to be a vacuum in the rocker box, crankase etc., I wonder if the cork washer is really there to help maintain that vacuum. Anyway, I shall certainly fit one now that I know mine is missing, on the basis that the designer wouldn't have specified it without a good reason!

By the way, did you know they've stopped manufacturing the DV10? I grumbled about this to Al(?) at BUKH [UK] Ltd and asked him what I would do when my present DV10ME [25 years old] finally wears out. His answer was:- "It won't!"
