So I bought the Elizabethan 30, not been in the water for 2.5 - 3.0 years, tried to handcrank the engine, Bukh 10, with decompression lever fully clockwise. Not a chance of movement! Broke the handle! Help.................

Don't panic. I would suggest you contact Bukh UK on 01202 668840 and ask for Norman Griffiths or Al Pearson.

Agree, don't panic, this is one of the most robust marine diesels ever built. I assume you oiled before trying to turn it over after 3 years non-use? Anyway, the guys at Bukh will sort you out.

Yep, totally agree with Cliff and pasta simon. The guys at Bukh diesel are great at helping to sort out problems. Norman Griffiths is a bit more knowledgeable (according to Al!!) on the minutiae the engines and, fortunately, should be back from holiday today!

Give either of 'em a call.

It may not be such a major panic as you think. Many years ago I bought a 1939 MG that had a seized engine, had not turned over for years. Although the piston rings had rusted to the bores they were easily moved when taken one at a time, using simple techniques such as overnight soaking in paraffin. Once this was done the engine turned over and subsequently ran quite well.

Very helpful, thanks. Told to start simply, half a cup of oil down the air intake or injector and give it a good time to settle and try again?

There you go! Do make sure the decompression is working before you try to crank her over to avoid creating a hydraulic lock.
