Bukh 10, I've heard of bargain hunting, but never bargain watching...................

I've no connection whatsoever to this ebay listing. Just thought someone here might appreciate the pointer.

(No doubt a few forumites are already among the 59 current watchers).

This looks like bargain of the month to me. Suprised no-one has closed.

I wouldn't say bargain of the month, seems about right for a 10hp second hand engine. No garantee or No mention of parts replaced on rebuild.

No mention of parts replaced on rebuild.
He says :

new main bearing and big end shells new piston & ring set new valves & springs and valve seats re-cut bore honed out engine de-coked and de-scaled including engine block and all water ways new fan belt new thermostat and seal new exhaust elbow new fuel and oil filters new anode & brass mounting bolt Bosch glow plug fitted with new inlet manifold Bosch fuel injector professionally refurbished new bearing on water pump drive casing water pump seals and impeller gearbox new oil and flange seal all new gaskets to suit. refurbished Bosch Dynastart (that cost £395 alone!!!) engine re-paint and various new hoses. there is probably more i have done but this is what i can remember, total cost was about £1800 and god knows how many man hours

see the Q&A.
the total spend seems about right. Could always ask for the receipts of course.
Anyway..........

I guess the phenomenon is similar to my aunt in her younger days. She would go window shopping before Christmas and drool over a pair of shoes, but wait for the sales - with any luck she'd gone off them by then. She still has enough shoes to open her own shop despite being a pensioner now.

There's an awful lot to go wrong in a rebuild like that, and without warranty or some assurance that the work has been done properly, I would hesitate too. Bearing shells for example: was the crank reground to match the shells? If not there's expensive trouble waiting after 50 hours or so. Everything torqued to the correct settings? If not there could be all kinds of problems and leaks. Even something as little as incorrectly torqued flywheel bolts or use of the wrong grade of steel in them on a BUKH can result in the flywheel coming off and going through the side or bottom of the boat without warning. I have seen it happen, once in a boat where by great good fortune the engine was on tickover, so the damage was not to bad. the other was in a workshop where the flywheel came off at full chat, went straight through two brick walls, and ended up 400 yards away! Lucky nobody was in the way.

Its very easy to spend a lot of money wrecking an engine. Maybe he does know what he is doing..... or maybe not.

Ok ill give in I missed the q&a. It was listed on 20th Dec so obviously it's not a bargain or it would have been snapped up.

No mention of gearbox ratio or direction.

But +1 to all the caveats mentioned so far.

For all you know - sight unseen. It has had little more than a few exterior bits replaced and a good coat of "renovating paint" applied

Not necessarily a bargain. Some years ago I could have had one needing some TLC for free-add perhaps £1000 for reconning bits.
So personally do not think this is a bargain only if you compare to new.

What OldHarry writes should be born in mind for any old 'refurbished' bit of kit on a boat....Caveat Emptor!

Without meeting the seller, his tool kit, his 'workshop', his engine workshop manual, his torque wrench, invoices, vernier gauges....who knows? Fools rush in. Issa bargin innit

Well I'm interested in a 10 to 15HP engine myself but 150Kg? 10 Hp engines seem to go into smallish boats nowadays, Contessa 26 et al. Can't see them installing a heavy lump like that!

That's the problem with the BUKH. I have one in a 28' boat. I use the engine as little as possible so most of the time I'm sailing around carrying a lot of useless weight (no dear, I honestly don't mean you). They are very reliable but expensive. I would like to replace mine with a lightweight engine but until it dies (which, after a mere 32 years's service, is unlikely), I can't justify the expenditure to she who audits the accounts.
