Please save me a trip to the boat just to read the engine manual. What is the correct oil for a Bukh DV20 from 1980 please. Engine oil, not gearbox (although though I recall Bukh saying you could use the same).
Many thanks

I use SAE 20 for the engine, and SAE 30 for the gearbox.

This was recommended to me by APAS Engineering, who also supplied me with the oil.

I was advised to avoid multigrade oil.

SAE30 SAE 30 SAE 30, and nothing else, is what our local agent says, confirmed by the Bukh book. Dont use multigrade, and above all dont use synthetic. Thats the advice.

The gearbox is particularly vulnerable as the cones will slip with the wrong grade of oil causing expensive damage.

Mind you he then wanted to sell me a 5 litre tin at around £35. I got it from a local Car Factors for £14

I endorse this choice - multigrade, mineral. I used this for years on my Bukh. Mineral 'cos it absorbs a certain amount of water, should water seep into the oil system - produces a black butter which you can see on the dipstick. Saves the engine. Synthetic will not do this and costs a lot more.
QED.

Any wobbles - phone Al or Norman at Bukh, Poole. They will give you the guff, and save you any money that can be saved. You are in good hands! And a good engine, too!

Hi,

I use Mobil Delvac 1330 SAE 30, single grade, heavy machinery mineral oil.
It is available from farming suppliers or heavy machinery suppliers.
20 litres are around 55.-Euros here in Ireland, which is a bargain, I think.

Regards,
jow
