Anyone found a fly or bug spray that actually 'works' ?

We have a real problem in France where we keep the boat and sick to death of paying out large amounts of money for totally ineffective spray.

My guess is they're all garbage these days due to chemical restrictions.

Depends on what effect you're looking for in a bug spray. I tend to think of the quick knock down of mossies or a swarm of houseflies: for that, most common or garden sprays seem to work fine. We use them inside the boat after we've put the bug screens up on the hatches to clear those insects that failed to take the hint and leave earlier. We then burn mossie coils to keep the little things at bay.
For harder to tackle nasties like cockroaches we use Raid spray and baited bug hotels. Seems to work.

I made one and it was tested by a National Trust warden.

Essential oil of citrus mixed with a carrier (alcohol). Vodka was cheaper and less smelly than rubbing alcohol

Another type was eucalyptus essential oil in alcohol.

Stick it in a spray bottle and no harmful chemicals.

Orange essential oil was used for repelling ordinary house fly.

All info was sourced from the net some years ago, but tried and tested and worked for us.

I dont know if they are available in Europe, but while staying in NZ for the last 4 months during their hottest summer since 1909, flies were troublesome in the house.

The local DIY store, Bunnings, sold a self contained unit consisting of an aerosol, screw on head with battery pack and a smart cover. About 30 Dollars NZ-16 quid ish.

It was free standing, was adjustable for day/night/24 hour and also for how many " squirts " per hour.

You screwed the head on the aerosol, inserted 3xAA cells and set it how you wanted it and then placed it fairly high uo. We put ours on a shelf.

It used plant derived spray-from crysanthemums IIRC, and proved to be extremly effective.

We set ours for 24 hours, every 30 minutes. From the numbers of dead bugs every morning which required cleaning up it was a real result.

I fitted a new aerosol before we left, it was just about empty. Quite impressed it lasted 4 months, The batteries were fine.

Might be worth a google search for such a device.

This is the product we use very good indeed.
