I am in the process of bying a buchanan 31 (9.90 mtrs) and therefore interested in information about its sailing qualities. Are there boat types to which a buchanan 31 could be compared to, esp boat speed and behaviour in very light winds (1 or 2 Beaufort)

Yes most proper boats, they are normally brilliant. The secret of light airs sailing in any traditional boat is to concentrate on keeping her moving - sail full and by, never pinch up, use the biggest lightest sails you can get and handle the tiller gently - slow curving turns when going about to keep way on her etc. The idea is to use you displacement to ghost throught the lulls and store up momentum in the gusts. It works suprisingly well. Also the long overhangs give you less drag when upright compared th the moder idea of long waterlines for max speed. Dont expect to pass the lightweight flyers (unill you get a 4/5 with a nasty chop then you will) but you should be able to get 2-4 nots. Have fun

Hello Roly-Voya,
I bought the Buchanan 31. This week she will be passed over to me. I'll keep you informed about her sailing qualities but I am sure she will do a good job. Do you know other owners of Buchanans, esp. the 31 ft Mark I type?

Hi Arie,

I have a Buchanan 32 built around 1964. I've been renovating for the past couple of years (new deck, carlin and deck beams mostly) and haven't had her in the water yet, but hopefully soon now. She looks like she should sail well though - lovely lines to all the Buchanan's of that era. By the way Alan Buchanan is still working - I recently wrote to him for some information and advice and received a very nice reply.
