I expect this has been mentioned before, but just in case it helps anybody, there is an exemption/holiday because of the virus until 31st July.

Determined not to pay for my registration because of the floods/lockdown, this week I decided to pay up - only to realise my BSS certificate had expired 15th May. Having booked an inspection, I phoned the EA in the faint hope they may be doing something similar to the MOT extension, and they are! You can register your boat but need to send them the certificate by 31st July. Very reasonable I think.

Are you sure? I read the 14/5/2020 update on the BSS website and understood that from that date the BSS deferral had been lifted.
It also lists the Covid specific requirements for the days before during and after the inspection. As one might expect, far more arduous than logic might suggest!

That has always been the case. Pay for your licence but they will not issue the licence plate until you have your BSS. Used this option twice in the past.
