Where would you recommend we anchor for a couple of days off Brownsea? We draw 1.4m and have a reasonable tender for getting ashore but with two young children getting close helps.

Thanks!

First, bottom is ooze black mud, so you need the 'right' anchor!
Second it gets all over foredeck when you leave, so have a bucket of water and brush to hand.
Places to anchor:
For deeper and shallow draft
- South Deep E of Goathorn Pt
- Just N of Brownsea Just E of Wills Cut
- S of Wills Cut towards Pottery Pier, but don't obstruct Trip Boats in the buoyed channel. Keel may touch mud but it will sink in.
Land on Brownsea free, on beach S of Wills Cut. Landing on Pottery Pier is no longer possible.
shallower draft (1.4)
- Round Wych Channel (be aware of buoyage Port / Sbd change) to W of Long Island off Shipstall Point, more sand than mud.
Land on Arne Peninsula, can see Deer and RSPB hide in vicinity.

And you have the temerity to preach to an East Coast sailor about MUD

South Deep,or, Off Green Island - near Blood Alley.

If you drop a hook on the north side, the tide is a bit fierce on ebb & you won't relax much.
Ask a certain forumite, with a jenneau 49 DS, who has a mooring there.

As LadyInBed suggests, South Deep, Pottery Pier or Shipstal Point are the three best for overnight. No access to the fleshpots of Poole easily by dinghy though. Fireworks tonight an car sow (VWs and Combis) tomorrow night. If you want to splash out on a berth then try Poole Yacht Club rather than the Quay. quieter, good bar and easy walk to the Quay.

What happened to Alderney?

There are some buoys in S Deep, often empty, I took a cheeky turn on one of them for a couple of tides, and nobody bothered me (2 tons disp). No point in messing about with the chain if you can use a vacant buoy.
Entertainment provided by R.Marines practising beach landings as well.

We've picked up a buoy for tonight on the North Side, we'll go round to the suggested site tomorrow to anchor. Waiting for a good wind for Alderney, the promised Northerly was only a F3 and we didn't fancy a 10 hour motor, no matter how cheap the diesel is there. Looks like Sw'lies for a week but we've got a few weeks left so no hurry .

Jolly nice from out here thanks. Spent today on the Island, it's more touristy than I thought it would be. The western end is very nice and even the younkers seemed half willing to explore it. All the way to the other end and back was a bit much for the three year old.

We're going to be at Cobbs Quay tonight from about 9.30pm and setting off tomorrow bound for Torquay. I'm stil undecided on times as things may alter due to the forecast rain. Here's my number anyway 07584 658400. It could just be a passing wave or we may hang out near you waiting for the weather and tide. (Neither of which are doing us any favours at the moment).

If you pick your spot carefully you could just about stay afloat in Blood Alley (in the middle of the south side of Browsea) with 1.4m draft. But you won't get in our out anywhere near low water.

Your first few hours from 6am will have a nice SE, moving SW. A bit of rain but clearing. The wind then settles from the West though.
