Broom continental info

Your best option for a canopy is to get a local supplier to custom make one. I've just bought a Continental and got a canopy made by a local guy. My boat has a radar arch. I can send you photos if you pm me your email.

HT 6354 parts were tricky when we had an Ocean 37 some years ago. Might be worth joining the Broom Owners Club as I hear they have some contacts who can supply or even make some items such as exhaust manifolds. Re-engining is a bit tricky (as well as expensive/possibly cost prohibitive) as the clearance in the engine bay isn't high enough for 'upright' engines.

My father has a continental, albeit with a single engine. We looked into buying one with HT6354's at one stage. Its the parts for the contra rotating (port) engine are scarce. Pistons are not available apparently. Also exhaust elbows are v.expensive (wasn't an issue for us as freshwater based). My uncle had one and he had issues with the scavange pump and required parts to be made up, this was 10yrs ago however.

Search for post by Latestarter on here or '6354' and you will find plenty of info. His advice on them is to run them and suffer their foibles and not to spend money on them. Cummins 6BT's are a viable replacement but require significant works to make them fit. See https://sites.google.com/site/thecumminsproject/case-studies/jamarc-re-engine
If I had one this is the route I would be following. Also nanni 200's and perkins m135's have been used but that would be a huge investment in an old boat imo.

Other than that they are a good boat, the same hull was used on the later Crown 37 which has a better layout with a double bed in the aft cabin. A rare engine option on the Crown was VP TAMD40's which have better parts availability than the perkins. Watch for osmosis but the layup is very heavy on these boats so not as much of an issue if localised. Check also for leaks from windows, we've rebuilt all of ours.
