Hi, I am looking at a number of Brooms for sale built in the 70's with Perkins 6.354 engine lying on its side. I have read the long thread on them on this forum with people saying run a mile from them and others saying they are what they are and just be aware.
I am looking at the Brooms for a live aboard and also a little bit of coastal cruising, not high hours of use.
One boat in particular that I am looking at, when it is revved, has a lot of white smoke from one exhaust and black from the other. My thought are in the area of injection pump, injectors or turbo's, all of which seem to be available as reconditioned units and (relatively) easy to replace.
Based on this assumption, if I were to go ahead with the purchase, I would factor this work into the offer - probably 4-5k.
I am interested in your thoughts on the smoke and its causes.
Thanks
Andy

If you purchase, do join the Broom owners club, loads of info, help and any support you need for the HT6.354's and Brooms in general there.

Can you look at fuel clarity, in a sedimentor or sample it? Cloudy fuel, or fuel with water in it, can cause white smoke, as can issues with injector pump timing on engine, injector pump, injectors, and other fuel related causes. Black smoke can be similar things plus air related issues.
