I have previously posted about these boats and recieved some useful advice.

I am thinking of going to look at one which has twin 80hp diesel engines and was wondering if anyone has any idea what sort of speed I can expect?

I know these aren't fast boats but my main options are displacement steel boats and I was wondering if the 80hp engines will cope OK with tides etc at sea? Logic suggests that they should, given that many displacement steel boats only have 1 small ish engine, but if anyone has experience of the Broom with small engines I would like to hear your views.

Pal of mine had a European with twin non-turbo 80s a few years back and crossed the Channel on numerous occasions. Think he used to reckon on 8/9kt cruising speed with 11/12 WOT (on a good day) I don't know where you intend boating but if you do not expect to encounter exceptional currents, the European with these small engines will prove as good as any other displacement boat - and probably better than most. Clearly it will pay you to work the tides

Ex hireboat.

You could check with Broom's (Andrew Stone) but I believe those fitted with these small engines tended to be for hire use, often in Ireland. Quote the build number to Andrew and he will give you it's history!

The more common engines were Perkins, Ford and Volvo from 115hp to 145hp.
top speed varied from 12kts to 20kts when new.
I would be surprised if you got more than 10kts from 2 x 80hp.

Thanks - very useful. 8-10 knots will be just fine. Useful to know about checking the history.
