Having been inspired by Mr Tw-K's early thread on varnishing I thought I should do some myself.

Whilst trying to get the perfectly smooth surface using fine wire wool I was helpfully told that exterior work required bronze wire wool, it seems the steel stuff leaves tiny specs liable to rust.

It makes sense but I have never heard of bronze WW

So far I have been unable to google bronze wire wool in the UK but it is available in the US

Maybe I should just stick to sandpaper.

I've never seen bronze wire wool. I do have some stainless steel wire wool and I also endorse the suggestion of a scotchbrite type of material although not for anyrthing more than final smoothing or 'denibbing' between coats of varnish. I also find a cabinet scraper very useful for getting a really smooth finish on wood, although they are a bit fiddly to sharpen.

These Hermes Webrax Hand Pads are what you want.

I had a half hour chat to a lovely woman at Axminster's about them. I did tell her that if, as a bachelor, I'd known there were women in the world who were prepared to talk about abrasives for hours, it could have changed my life.

(By the way - someone should explain to me how to create the hyperlink in a post without pasting in the whole url.)

If you click on URL it first prompts you for the link and then prompts you to enter any title you wish. This is only available in "reply" and not "quick reply"

Bronze wool has long been used in the care and restoration of guns. A firm manufacturing it used to be based at Gillingham. As many have pointed out, 3M softpads, which come in various grades, is a good replacement.
You might still find a box of bronze wool in a Gun shop (most of the time, for removal of the blueing of a gun barrel. Ramrods with a bronze wool head are still regularly available.)
