Hi,

I have bought a HPE fuel tank with a 2" BSP male BSP thread and I need to make a filler adaptor for it. I have only been able to source 2" fuel caps with female threads which nicely decides the thread I need on the top of the filler adaptor :-) I need to fabricate the filler adaptor from two bronze pieces.

My questions are:

  1. Can you soft-solder bronze to bronze (or bronze to DZR/brass) ?
  2. What is the best way to fix the female end of the adaptor to the HDPE fuel tank so that it won't ever undo while undoing the fuel cap ? Is there a type of threadlock that will work with HDPE / bronze ?

Thanks,

If the tank has a male thread and the cap has a female thread, why do you need an adapter?
Good question. The tank inlet is rather short and the tank is directly beneath the cockpit sole so I need something that will raise the lip of the filler to a point that water and carp won't easily get in when I remove the deck plate to fill the tank. A 2" BSP male to female adaptor would be ideal but I can't find one so will have to solder it together from 2 parts.

Soldering will be fine with those metal combinations. Threadlock is an adhesive that as far as I know does not react in any way with the metal of the threads, so what works with steel should work with brass and bronze.

Thanks Vyv, I was more concerned with whether the threadlock would work with HDPE though ?

HDPE is tricky stuff to glue to, as you know. So perhaps the thing to do is look at mechanical fastenings instead. Is there enough wall thickness in the lower bronze fitting to drill and tap a hole for a grub screw? Then drill a matching blind hole in the plastic thread for it to locate into. I'd have thought that would stop it inadvertently unscrewing.

BES paper catalogue pages175 - 176

Full socket BSP 2in #14354
Parallel nipple BSP 2in #14467

316 stainless and not silly prices. You might have to shorten one piece or the other.

The only adhesive that I have found that sticks to polythene is contact adhesive.
