My 2858 is advertised for sale on four of the most popular websites.

I was contacted yesterday by a well known broker who offered to advertise my boat for me in his shop window and FOC on various websites on a no sale no fee basis.

He said he was confident he could find a buyer for a boat such as mine priced the way it is!

I asked at what commision and he said that as he approached me it would be at 5% and not his usual 8%

So I asked him that if he was that confident then why not haggle with me, buy my boat and make far more than the proposed 5% on an outright sale?

His answer.....................They no longer have provisions to buy vessels outright! and they no longer hold accounts that allow them to output large sums of money!!

If he haggles with you and you do agree a deal, he will be paying "market value". He can only sell it at "market value" so the only margin he might make will be the saved brokerage fee he might make. Plus, of course, he is taking all the risk with his ( or possibly the Banks ) capital.

I think I am with the broker on this one...
 
Eh, is this for real? A broker is just that. He brokers sales. If he bought every boat that he was advertising for his own stock he'd have to make a far bigger margin than 5% to cover the financing and storage costs so he wouldn't be able to buy your boat at the price you're asking. That's why when you go to a car dealer, he'll give you less for your p/x than you could have got privately

well, what is he suggesting? No sale, no commission. Great offer, that. And he can hardly say he hasnt got anyone interested at all, can he?
Sounds like the famous broker b-shite to me.
 
I'm in sales and the point I was getting at was his in confidence in getting a sale...............

Roles reversed If I had a buyer waiting for a "said" boat then I'd be haggling like crazy and making a very tidy profit!

He is obviously hitting me with his sales pitch and would hope to sell it soon rather than having anyone lined up.
 
What an unbelievable thread!

The broker is making a very fair offer to attempt to sell your boat with no strings attached and an industry leading rate, and still some of you are smelling fish? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Of course he doesn't want to buy your boat! He would hit you with a far lower price if he were to buy it as trade, which is how the world works. Far less risky for him to offer you an appealling package, and have a good chance of selling it to one of a few punters he may have had contact with.

Risk to you = 0%

Risk to him 0%

Minor inconvenience either way, there is no fairer method methinks.

For the record, Thames boat Sales at Bray just sold my boat within 1 day, and brokered a deal for my next one at the same time.

No, surely not?

Do you think he'll sell your boat or not? If so, give him the chance 'coz 5% is reasonable (I know one broker who wants 10% for multiple agency). If not, tell him to bugger off but don't waste his time telling him he ought to buy your boat
 
Only benefit I can see is allowing him to put it on his website and in his showroom window.

I have it up on the sites that he told me he would also put it on so why would he attract more interest than I am, I mean at the end of the day buying a brokerage boat gives the punter no more guarantees than a private sale..............

i cannot see what I can gain here? anyone in the market for a boat knows where to look dont they?
 
Some people feel happier dealing with a broker. Usually lots of money involved!
Would you buy an expensive car privately?

Not entirely true. Brokers are supposed to check unencumbered title to the boat they are selling so that the buyer can be as sure as possible (but never 100% sure) that he is buying a boat that belongs to the seller and is free of liens. Brokers are bound by laws governing trade descriptions etc such that a buyer may have more comeback against a broker if the boat is not as advertised than if it were a private seller. Brokers will prepare an appropriate contract of sale and try to ensure that title and VAT documentation are present. There are many people, me included, who prefer to buy via a broker
From the sellers point of view, obviously the broker should be advertising the boat more widely than a private seller and arranging for viewings without bothering the seller (although that is not always the case). Often the broker acts as a go between between buyer and seller to sort out difficulties that arise in the sales process
IMHO, a good broker should achieve a somewhat higher price than a private seller will but then not all brokers are good

the salemans only bullshit as far as I can see, is refering to no sale no commission to pay. His offer of 5% was not bullshit just sensible given the current market circumstances

Rob asking him to buy he vessel was odd, as dealers buy brokers generally dont
 
Brokers can help with a lot of details that not everyone knows about. Here are some examples in no particular order.
a) Verification of VAT status
b) If the boat was imported is the suporting paperwork complete.
c) Does the boat need to be CE plated? Or is it exempt?
d) Verification of ownership.
e) Are there any debts on the boat?
Reputable brokers will be insured and have a duty of care.
