Frustration, frustation, frustration.

Do brokers actually DO anything?

The past week has gone like this....

Saturday - Travel for 2 hours to see a possible new toy.
Monday a.m. - Call broker, no answer, so make an offer via email.
Monday pm - No acknowledgement of offer so I phone them. "Leave it with us" is the short reponse.
Tuesday - Silence
Wednesday pm - I phone broker to find out what's happening, leave message with secretary - broker doesn't call back.
Thursday - I wait all day for the phone to ring, nothing, so I call broker. "We can't get hold of the owner"
Friday - Silence
Saturday - I call broker. "Any progress?" I ask. "Still can't get hold of the owner" he replies.

Apparently, the owner is "keen to sell". Oh really ?

Why am I having to work so hard at this? The broker has made no effort whatsoever to contact me, even to do me the courtesy of saying, "Nice to meet you on Saturday, thanks for your offer, we're trying to contact the owner" or "Hi, we've left another voicemail for the owner and we'll call you again as soon as we have an answer".

We are talking about a lot of money here.

The owner may have to pay the commission to the broker......but who makes that payment possible? Huh? Moi!

There's a great saying...

"If these are the rules of engagement, then lets forget about the marriage!"

In other words, go find a similar boat from a different broker / dealer 'cos this one will give you nothing but grief - pre & post sale.

Rob - be nice to me or I'll tell everyone the one about a Fairline owner, a large brand new fender and a heating exhaust outlet..... Of course, I might be prepared to forget about it if you give me the difference in price between second-hand and new...?

Brokers, estate agents all the same in my book! they are all useless and you pay silly amounts of money for their time!! I was trained as a salesman many years ago, so I figure why pay someone for doing something I can do better! I have always sold my own boats and my own houses and never had a problem! And of course have saved a lot of my hard earned money!

Barry - Completely agree, selling and buying privately does avoid the atrocious service and ridiculous charges of the brokers. (That said, I received 1st class service when I bought my Sealine in 2002).

But, when you are trying to buy something where a broker has been engaged to represent the seller what choice do you have? I can't deal directly with the seller and, despite the urge, I can't tell the broker what I really think of him because I am trying to negotiate a purchase for which he is the agent.

I agree there is not much that can be done in this situation, even if you did a deal behind their backs they can sue you for the money if they discover what you have done! but I would still tell them if I thought their service was no good! after all they are looking to make their profit as swiftly as possible. They are only too happy if the price gets knocked down and the boat sold quickly so they can take their cut and get on with the next sale!

Best of luck

Barry
