.....spotted passing Dunoon bank ATM, accompanied by what appears to be about half the RN; all manner of things painted grey. Tugs, minesweepers, frigates, fishery cruisers. What a palaver.

cheers,
David

I was wondering, just how do they tow a submarine? Are they fitted with a little loop at the front like a car?

It is like a car...

The towing loops are painted red and are found under a flap in the sub's conning tower.

All you are required to do is install it into the socket on the sub bow.

Easy!!! Job done!

My boat is on Royal Northern and Clyde YC moorings at Rhu, just inside the narrows, and down the Loch from Faslane. I was aboard yesterday, and on the Club jetty with binoculars when the procession went by. HMS Montrose, followed by the sub, followed by a RCN frigate. There were two tugs, one on either side, but it seemed as if the one on the sub's starboard side was towing alongside. The sub didn't look very big. Her Canadian ensign was at half-mast.

I don't know if they were towing alongside out at sea, however.

Lots of sick jokes on this forum about this disaster,
don't think Lt. Chris Saunders two sons age 2 years and age 7 weeks will see any humour in this, not nice to grow up in this world without a father, I hope the Canadian govt sue the pants off the MOD.

Yes of course, that was very sad and in no way intended to offend in any way. Of course everybody is thinking the same, that it is somehow the governments fault or the Navy. But It has been said that the submarine underwent full service and left port in perfect working order! It is of course possible that the new purchasers of this vessel were not fully conversant with all its controls which possibly could of caused this most dreadful situation. There will be an investigation of course and the cause will be discovered in the fullness of time. I humbly apologise to anyone who feels that my little comment was sick, however this forum is usually meant for a little passing of knowledge and a little bit a light hearted banter!

Agree with first part of your post but do not think the Canadian govt have the rights to sue the pants off the MOD. The Canadians have been using the subs for around 6 years (under lease) so they knew what they were geting.
