Yes, I know. Don't ask. :(

Is it worth sleeving? The break is clean and the pole remnants don't appear to be distorted according to my micrometer.

The tube is 50mm od and I can buy a short length of thin wall tube with 50mm id to make an external sleeve. The resulting repaired pole will only be used as a whisker pole for the Genoa.

Opinions please.....

whisker pole in compression; unlikely to be subject to lateral load against a shroud ?

Sleeved, decent rivets staggered (not in line), anti-corrosion paste. Go for it.

It's got to be worth a try and you've already accepted that it has a reduced usefulness. With a reasonale length of overlap and rivetted in a staggered pattern that avoids weakening it further it may almost regain its full strength. The other option would be to source a new, full-length pole and re-use the ends on it.

Thought about new pole but this way I can get the parts in the car and effect the repair in the boat yard. I can't get a 3m length of pole in the car, I've had a measure up already.

Sounds like it's worth doing. Thought about epoxy & rivets.

Just sleeve it using a piece the same diameter with a cut to let it fit into the existing tube. Rivet it with 2 staggered rows on each side of the join using monel rivets and it will be fine as a spinnaker pole again.

I got a pole spinny sleeved for a mast head 50 footer in the late 80's to get us through the Scottish series as a temporary repair.
a friend delivered the same boat to Spain last year and the same pole was still in use.
Just a straight edge on both ends and a tight fitting internal sleeve that we slathered with epoxy and put in 8 rivets each side of the joint a random intervals from memory the pole was about 4"OD.

It begs the question... Why did the pole break? If you do the same thing to it it will probably break again. Did you have bridle for the topping lift so that lift is actually to the end of the pole? Or did it break on the forestay?
Either way yes it will be fine for whisker pole but if you use it for a spin pole be gentle!!!
If you use epoxy on ali make sure it is very clean of oxide etc under the epoxy.
good luck olewill
