Those of us who have been deprived of BB for the last 3 weeks and now have heaven restored can now waste lots of time on YBW. And its a whole lot more fun than wasting time trying to dial-up in the first place !

What you've got is not broadband.
I've just moved to a new marina north of paris and am having troubles deciding on my next broadband provider

Which package should i choose

"Neuf telecom" package offering 8mbps connection, phone line, wifi access point and unlimited local calls for €23 per month
or
"Free.fr" offering 15mpbs, (yes fecking fifteen) and the phone line, free calls etc for €30 per month.

remind me again how much are you paying for your half megabyte?

But will they make Scuttlebutt run any faster than my 1mbps link? BTW what is Artists against 419 (for interested non-techies)? I was too scared to click the link!

1. I wish something would speed up shufflebutt. But nothing known to man or hidden by BT will do it
2. "Artists again 419", sleazy as it may sound, is a sincere website that uses images purely from 419 scamming websites and refreshes them every 10 seconds.
The idea being that the scammers have to pay for bandwidth and many people eating up images hits them directly in the pocket.

Not when you compare london living rates to these rates
Living in France, working occasionally in london works out better for me

Ashley please tell us more - our understanding was that France was way behind in BB provision (v important to us) - plainly I'm out of date. Do you know any more about coastal coverage or the spread of provision ? If we can pop into marinas to do the work and then head off sailing again I'd be a happy bunny !

Ah, this is the great divide

France is way ahead of UK in terms of "local loop unbundling" which is where the country's main phone provider releases phone lines for small operators to sell on.

If you're a resident, or in a marina for a while, you can get France telecom to install a phone line, then once they've been in to do the work, you dump them and sign up with a broadband provider who can give you a minimum of 8mbps line and telephone for an incredibly cheap fee.

But if you're passing through, you can only really use "Orange wifi" service which is around €10 per hour so very pricey and only based in airports and hotels

Wireless to the marina is rare, but let's see what happens this summer.
As they say, watch this space

Thanks Ashley. Know all about local loop unbundling (or not as the UK case largely is since BT hasn't heard of fair competition /forums/images/icons/smile.gif). We have 2Mbps symmetrical - too far from the exchange to get ADSL anyway but we regard this as superb. I suppose at 8 or 15 Mbps you don't care if its symmetrical really !

Lets hope French marinas get into wireless hotspots shortly - I am avidly following the growth in the UK.

Do keep us all posted on what happens in France. I shall be telling my sister in law in rural S France she could have better broadband than us ! Is it just Paris or is unbundling worthwhile in rural areas too ?

Take a look at this <A target="_blank" HREF=http://adsl.free.fr/degroup>map</A>
Blue areas are "degrouped" and red/blue are planned. Puts the UK to shame!

Only a couple of the broadband providers give more than 256K upload but if you went for the 15mb service you get 1mb upload which is great.

Claymore, if Scotland was not so cold and gripped by permafrost BT might be able to cable you for broadband.
Move somewhere warmer...like Newcastle.

I moved from london where, unbelievable but true, our corner of the london docks was too far from an exchange to get ADSL.
Sold up and left i did
