Our channel islands trip ended with a poorly heat exchanger which has been fixed, but the CI bit has been relegated to another season. We are currently in Weymouth, and have the 7yr old in tow. 7 yr old prefers rock pools to big sandy beaches.

As per title, both are MDL, both in the same bay. I'm currently thinking Brixham looks prettier, and might be more sheltered?
Any actual experiences of either appreciated.

Brixham is a lot nicer than Torquay.

Brixham quaint little fishing port.

Torquay a bit moribund.

Dartmouth even nicer but not MDL I think?

Ta,
Brixham and then Dartmouth looks like a plan for the moment.
Assuming we can get around the wavy bits on the chart off Portland Bill...

Best beaches are going to be in Salcombe.
I prefer Brixham to Torquay, but you wont really need more than a could of days. Well, couple of hours and you have done it !

Have you considered Teignmouth. Visitors pontoons off the back beach, which is just inside the well sheltered river. lengthy beaches ,rock pools, and the lovely river Teign to explore. Depending on size of your boat, you may need your dingy to reach the top of the river, but its great fun for all ages.

Teignmouth - no electric or water!

With a 7 yr old I would say Brixham instead of Torquay. Small sheltered beach (with rock pools) next to marina, free seawater swimming poll 200 yards away. We have a 12 year old and 7 year old and they love Brixham. Am a bit biased as we berth there !!!!

Town not so good for shopping as Torquay - but I see that as a positive !! (saves my wife spending !)

Brixham, take the coastal path towards Berry Head, and discover the waterside Lido pool and take a swim (free), the small beach next to the breakwater is good to stop for an ice cream and the views off Berry head around the old fort and lighthouse are worth the 20min walk.
Just before you enter Brixham fairway over to starboard is fishcombe cove, if you get chance drop the hook for an hour or two and grab your snorkeling gear, seals frequent the cove so you might get lucky, alternativley take a walk over there through Battery Gardens (old gun emplacements) to the small beachside cafe situated in the cove, a couple of days in Brixham would see it all.
There are many reasons why Brixham would be choice over Torquay but if you want cosmapolitan, cafe' atmosphere, alfresco dinning, live music and quality shoping then Torquay would be better suited, don't be put off, the marina and staff at Torquay are excellent.
There are many attractions close to Torquay, so if the weather is poor it's easy to keep your 7yr old engaged, Model Village at Babbacombe, Living Coasts in Torquay, Kents Cavern at Babbacombe, Train links Via Paignton to Dartmouth etc etc.

So good weather Brixham, poor weather Torquay....Then onto Dartmouth and Salcombe.

Most has already been said. Torquay for more night life, far more places to eat, loads more shops, sandy beach and a more protected marina. Brixham for quieter place, fishing boats, slower pace, Sea water pool, but pebble beach. Good coastal walks in both. MDL diesel at Brixham. Torquay can be a bit lively on Fri and Sat nights. Very nice sandy beach at Broadsands or Goodrington (short bus ride from either). Definetely bimble round to the Dart well worth it, though vis moorings will be very busy in Aug.

Made it to Brixham. Staff seem friendly, and initial impressions are of a quaint village with not too much happening - a good thing, IMHO :)

The wavy bits on the chart do deserve to be there, and that was at slackish water, F3-4, and about 5 miles south of the bill.

We had a great run from Dartmouth to Torquay today, I have to say its not as nice as I remember it, was last here two years ago, its not good walking the dog with all the broken glass around, will stay here for 2 nights then have booked 3 nights at Brixham as I much prefer it there, then back to Dartmouth for the following week for Regata.

Next time take the inner channel around the bill, around 4 hours after high water. Nice and safe, we came round the other way and were a vit too far out and got caught in what can best be describedd as a washing machine!

Brixham is lovely, again biased as were berth holders, The Dart @ Dittisham is a must, visit the FBI and stay the night on a visitor mooring for less than £12
