Irishman Enda O'Coineen crossed alone from Halifax to Dunmore East, Ireland in 1978. His boat was a 16 foot Zodiac with a 25hp engine and a windsurf rig. Can't recall how long it took, but I do know that he arrived at Dunmore at 03h00, walked into the Harbour Hotel, took a room key from the board and left a note saying "Please ring my wife to tell her I have arrived and wake me for breakfast at 9."
He wrote a book about the crossing "The Unsinkable Kilcullen" and went on to race in the mini Transat and organised a not very successful Irish entry for the Whitbread.
Mind you, an Irishman sailed to North America a bit after Eric and long before Columbus.
Correction : St Brendan the Navigator did it in the 6th century following accounts that had been given to him by others who had done it before.
Furthermore ogham scripts (stone carved letters originating in Ireland) were found in America suggesting that the Irish may have visited more than 2000 years ago.
He went in the 1950's setting off without either food or water to prove that you could still live off the sea resources - he was a marine biologist.
Crossing the Atlantic with 3 people in an inflatable with a 450 hp inboard engine and stopping off in Greenland and in Iceland is not in the same league as Bombard's trip, commendable adventure though it still was.
I somehow miss the sense in all of these pointless records. The phrase 'get a life' springs to mind.
Seems most of them are would be adventurers with no real purpose, looking for fame and fortune, done on the pretense of 'raising money for a good cause'. All IMHO of course.
No sorry not breaking news. Funny that the Jolly Sailor was there on the 3rd August and did it in a much faster time. Just bad BBC reporting which is silly as I was on a boat with the BBC crew filming the Jolly Sailor as it arrived off the needles.
I must agree that the reporting is lousy, totally ignoring AP. To be fair, the papers record it as "first time in an open boat" - but then AP did that (or very blimmin nearly?) several years ago. Recording it as "unassisted" is also not as AP has ever claimed - stops in Iceland (and greenland?) copy priddy's earlier trip. Poor show giving all this coverage to BG and zippo to AP. Is it the PR is better or wot?
Sorry Trev have ro disagree. Yes Alan was doing it because thats what Alan does however, he also works closely with Make a wish giving up his own time and money to help.
As for BG I cant comment.
BTW the trip was paid for before the charities were selected so it was done as a piggy back event not used as a feeder by saying its for charity. How do I know...I wrote the cheque, thats how!
Matt yes, you are right and there is a lot more to come from this. It is annoying that they should knock previous efforts in AP and crew in 1997 who did it in a 7.5m OPEN RIB not an 11m OPEN RIB, yes that is 7.5m..Yes they had help but they also went back to where they got the help from and started all over again from that point. To knock that achievment and then claim you are the first is a bit of a p*** take.
It is funny how the media spin went on this with alot of people covering BG and not AP even our own YBW seemed to have decided not to cover this despite having all the updates. Why I dont know, but BG PR machine seemed to be in the right place at the right time however AP did it again on a tiny budget and again set the record.
Lets hope future sponsors and media recognise this NEXT time. As for fame and fortune, the money certainly isnt worth it as AP put his own cash in and the fame, well ask BG!
