While refurbishing our old seagull outboard we have noticed that the engine block is cracked can we fix it without buying a new one (haha) or can anyone recomend a good place to buy a new one

Much as I love to help UK Ltd, I think you'll find the new replacement block comes with an upgraded head, drivetrain, prop, tank, ignition system and throttle assembly etc. They have 'Mariner' written on them, sadly.:(

There are many sources of spares, both new and secondhand for Seagull Spares. Sheridan Marine own the rights and Saving old Seagulls is one specialist supplier.

The block cannot be repaired. The castings were pretty rubbish when they were new, although cracking is unusual, probably due to water passages silting up.

Fix it ? Depends ...
Assuming you've now got all the concreation out of the waterways - if it's a clean crack across the jacket, (i.e. not involving the head studs, exhaust etc), then you can do one of two things:
1) take it to a welder experienced in cast iron repairs. With pre-heating, a nickel electrode and slow cooling, there's a chance it can be fixed. Won't be cheap.
2) groove out the crack with an angle-grinder and thin zip disk, then apply JB Weld into the enlarged gap. It's a bodge - although a good one - and should last several seasons. If this kind of repair should ever begin to fail, you'll have plenty of warning, and small amounts of water lost through a failing water jacket repair won't be critical to the motor's performance - so I feel quite comfortable about recommending this. Indeed - I did just this on a 'clean crack' 5 years ago, and it's still going strong, although I always take 2 engines to sea with me.

Needless to say, if the crack is at all complex - i.e. involving the exhaust stub, the head studs - or perish the thought, the cylinder bore - then 'fraid it's well and truly goosed.

If you want a new block, then contact John Williams at:

but he's on holiday for another few days. They're not cheap.

I also believe that Sheridan Marine have had some made - but they cost a small fortune.
