Just back in UK for a couple of weeks and amongst the waiting post an anual letter from a boat yard on the river Dart quoting prices for our boat for certain items:
£118 +VAT for a lift: Port Olompic, Barcelona £21 inc. VAT
£56 step mast: £10 Barcelona

And so it goes on.

Why is the UK so expensive?

high labour costs with a high standard of living.

just suppose it takes 2 men and a crane half an hour to step your mast. £10 for that? even with the minimum pay of say £5 per hour, then overheads and crane costs and insurance, and dead time. maybe £56 is toppy, but £10 is impractical in the uk.

in fact it costs us £10 at my yacht club with all labour free, no overheads just a hired crane.
