Hi all,

Well, as per previous posts, I am now the proud owner of a new (to me) Fairline Weekend 21.

She is in a sorry state, but with some work, hopefully she will come up nicely....

So, here is where you fine, and all knowing, people come in....

1) I am looking for someone, local to Bristol, who is expert in Volvo Penta petrol engines, and drive legs. I would prefer an independant who knows his stuff and doesn't charge a fortune, however anyone who really knows there stuff would do as well.

Problem with engine is as follows:-

I need to know how to operate the choke to start her in the mornings - my old Mercruiser used to need the throttle opening to full and then pulling back to set the choke - I take it this one is different.!!
engine runs a bit lumpy, sometimes ticking over at 700 rpm - sometimes at 1500-1800rpm - seems like settings shot...
Will rev up to about 2500-3000rpm but any attempt to increase revs over that causes the engine to die totally to a tickover!!
Has no "punch" at all, opening the throttle smoothly and quickly begins to increase revs, but once 2/3rds throttle is reached/exceeded then the engine does the "dying swan" impersonation as above....

There seems a lot of oil around the air inlet area.. I wonder what this is.

Having said all this, once running around 2000rpm, she runs absolutely sweetly, so I am thinking this is all a case of a damn good service.

The leg only goes up a bit on her own, then stops, if I pull it whilst someone else operates the switch she gets over the "sticking point" and will come all the way up.

2) Surveyor.

Once we have done all the work, we need to get the boat surveyed and valued - we're in Bristol, any suggestions??

3) Upholstery / Trim

Again, someone local to Bristol preferred, Anyone know / have used a good trimmer??

Thanks in advance and I await the uploading of information for which this site is so fantastic!

good luck with the project. If your engine is anything like the VP 151 petrol we had in our first sealine then to start you need to pump the throttle about 8 times before trying to start.

Hi Grant

The leg issue sounds a bit familiar to a past problem with mine. In my case the trim pump needed replacing as the hydrolics were sticking. The price of a trim pump new seemed a bit much so shopped around and had my existing one reconditioned for about £350. They test it for 48 hours before sending it back and you get a years warrenty too. However, the wiring loom for the pump has its own issues with corrosion but this loom is only available from Volvo and if you buy a new trim pump.

Hope this helps.

David
