Current issue (July) has a perfect boating weekend article on the BC. Staerting at Swansea he visits Watermouth Cove, Ilfracombe etc. Written by Peter Cumberledge

Interesting, neaps and good weather required methinks for a night at anchor at Ilfracombe.

Pity he left out Lundy, Flatholm, Steepholm, Portishead, Bristol, Cardiff etc etc

Really only a part of the BC was covered.

Indeed, but in fairness its a big channel and you only have a weekend so you will never cover it. When they started talking about diong something on the BC I had brief chat with Hugo about doig something but then Peter Cumberlidge did it and after having written the BC bible he is probably better qualified than me!

I was going to do Portishead, Cardiff, Watchet, WSM and back - which also leaves out 90%

Let me know if you get to Cardiff and need a berth.

We get to Cardiff regularly - when I have a boat, that problem should be sorted in the next week. We are in Portishead marina so we get a reciprocal agreement with Penarth, but thanks for the thought

No worries, I am in Penarth Marina on the private residential berths.

Nice, its a lovely marina, weren't they putting a bar/restaurtant in there? That would be good, there is no way I could persuade SWMBO to walk up the hill!

Yes the restaurant/bar is coming on nicely and will be finished for this summer apparently and believe that there will be short term visitor berth just in front.

Reckon we'll still have to overinduldge in the Oystercatcher on a sunny sunday when in Cardiff!
Looking forward to having a look at the new Restaurant (Pier 42?)

Apparently you can moor on the pontoon instant left turn as you come through barrage. Then you have the custom house restaurant which is good.

If you don't mind getting bashed by the water buses. Seriously I wouldn't moor there as waves from the bay will bash your boat against the pontoon. I've only stopped there a few times briefly to empty my holding tank with the poo sucking machine and the pontoon is a very heavy concrete affair which doesn't seem to move much with any wave action. The last result was that my boat nearly got pushed up onto the pontoon because an idiot fisherman went too fast from the marina to the barrage and the wake from his boat pushed mine nearly up on to the pontoon. Not to mention every 20 mins you will have a water taxi or bus pulling in and out for there. Going into Penarth Marina.

Well I now have the bits on board to fix my boat so very much looking forward to doing the penarth run from portishead. Penarth is my home town, grew up there until my late twenties and my twin brother still lives there. I was going to mention that I remember the old Cardiff docks a long time before the barrage but I tell people I'm in my thirties so I must be lying lol.
I'm looking forward to visiting pier42.
